Are you sure it is SATA? Last site I looked at said PATA100. So far as I know the difference is similar to the difference between serial ATA and IDE. Just that SATA has a faster data transfer rate than PATA. Wonder why laptops never jumped on the 133 bandwagon, they seem to have gone straight from 100 to 150. But, desktops are my specialty, not laptops.

No 2.5" drive in production even comes close to breaking the ATA 100 barrier even in burst mode so all this talk about ATA 133, SATA vs PATA is pointless.

how is the non-carbon portion of the notebook feels. Does it feel like a cheap plastic?

Is the mouse regular (desktop) size or smaller (notebook) size ??

Also what's the quality of acer screens? I've been working from time to time on Acer travelmate 220 and the screen was terrible !!! It was flickering almost all the time. My teacher told me not to buy an Acer because it's screens quality is very poor. What is the screen quality in new laptops ??
Yes how is the screen? The responsetime, any ghosting? Viewing angles etc...

Hey Polar I was just wondering about Windows XP x64 PRO, when you installed it did you have to load any 64 bit drivers to make stuff work (i.e. the sound card, video card) Do you recommend upgrading to 64 bit or staying 32 bit and waiting for more software? Could a person play a 32-bit game like Half-Life 2 on windows pro x64?
thanks

SATA vs PATA

There is an issue on the centrinos/sonoma's is there not ?

The HDD and the CD/DVD share the same channel, and end up slowing each down when you are using both at the same time. Correct me if I am wrong, but that was a reason for a SATA on the Sonoma chipsets.

Do the AMD chipsets have a single IDE channel? Or seperate channels one for the HDD and one for the CD/DVD.

yeah speaking of x64, whats the deal with the partitions that it comes in stock. Somone said in another thread there are 2 sperate ones and then a hidden recov all in fat32, so yeah i was thinking of wiping it all and then just installing win pro x64. Anyone else share my dream?

Sounds good, I think I would make three NTFS partitions; one for Windows XP pro (25GB), another for X64 (25GB), and the last one for data storage (the rest of the space).

So I would dual-boot...

On a side note I really hope that Costco will get the Ferrari 4000, I like being able to return something 6 months later - no questions asked.

I just took my Acer Ferrari 3400 back for a refund [After 5 months of playing around with it]

I am prety much deadset on getting Acer Ferrari 4005 I just have some questions if you can clear up for me PolarTW.

The reason I returned my 3400 was the heat! The left palm rest got so HOT, and the fan was on constantly and was extremely LOUD.

I am a little reluctant since the Turion in the Ferrari 4000 [ML-37 AMD Turion 64, 2.0Ghz, 35W, 90mm, Intergrated Memory Controller] is pretty much the SAME exact processor [tweaked with 512kb more on chip cache]

Ferrari 3400 housed [Ultra-Low Voltage Mobile AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3000+ 2.0GHz, 35W, 90mm, Intergrated Memory Controller]

PolarTW does the Ferrari 4000 have the same issues as the 3400?

After playing around with it for awhile now you noted it got warm but never HOT, still true?

What about the fan, is it as audible has the 3400?

Any problems using the wireless mouse with 3 USB on the right side?
[i.e. cords getting in the way, etc...]

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't the 3400+ in the Ferrari 3400 a 130nm part not a 90?

I think im just gonna go all out and install only x64 and deal with the bugs. It seems to be working pretty well for a lot of people and I already checked it is compatible with all the programs i use, cept alcohol 120. Supposedly they are gonna get a 64-bit edition somewhat soon. What is the best program to rip and that acer partition crap off and start out new so I can install x64?

It's not bugs that I'm worried about in Windows X64, it's more about me being able to say that I'm dual-booting... That and if I need 32-bit Windows for something I'll know that it's there.

As for managing the partitions: you could use Partition Magic which runs from within Windows and doesn't need to format the hard drive after a re-partition or whatever.

I would use Fdisk or something similar:

Looks like the ferrari 4000 finally made it up on Acer's website under the products section.

http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr4000.htm

Screen has crystalbrite and 185nits. The wireless has WPA and CCX (I don't know what this one is).

I'm confused. I remember in some of the Ferrari threads, there were people saying that the 4000 use a regular lcd screen but now it appears the second model (maybe the cheaper one???) will have crystalbrite screen.

From acer.com:
15.4” WSXGA+ 185-nit color TFT LCD, 15.4” WXGA 185-nit Acer CrystalBrite color TFT LCD

And also, does PolarTW's 4000 have regular lcd or crystalbrite screen?
