XPS2 or 9880? - Page 3

I take your point Luke and no doubt in the areas of multi-tasking, the P4 has a clear advnatage. My area is actually 3D animation, simulation and compositing, not games. All of these are pretty CPU and OpenGL intensive, often beyond the capabilites of any notebook.

I respect your passion for these machines, I have heard nothing but wonderful things about these notebooks and the service you provide to your customers. For me, the whole joy of getting a notebook was portability (i.e. running on battery when needed) and using my toy while it comfortably sits on my lap. That's what tilted me toward the XPS2.

I am fascinated by the obsession with wanting to turn a notebook into desktop killers. No laptop on earth is going to outperform the desktop machines I use at work, so it's never going to be an issue for me. With due respects, RAID 0 or 1 or otherwise, few professional would bank on this set-up to protect data on a system that, by definition, is constantly moved around and bound to encouter some nasty knocks. That's what backups and external hard drives are for. As for storage, my personal assets take up the better part of terrabyte so storage is not a deciding factor for me.

I do appreciate your comments Luke.

Here's the XPS2. The author is a random user.

Here's another XPS2 benchmark from Anandtech
http://www.anandtech.com/video/show...?i=2356&p=4

Note that there are multiple pages to this XPS2 review. And the only similar benchmarks are Doom3 and Far Cry.

Overall the computers are dead even in gaming.
Little harsh. He was trying to be helpful to the orig. poster. I actually appreciated the article since I'm still arguing w/ my husband over which one to get.

Honestly, I don't know how anyone can really make a fair comparison between the two. Why? I've only seen one 9880 review (PC Torque's). And the benchmarks in the review use different settings than any XPS Gen 2 review I've read.

I've only found 2 benches that jive:

3DMark05

XPS Gen 2 (HotHardware.com) 5242
XPS Gen 2 (TrustedReviews) 4898
XPS Gen 2 (Tom's Hardware) 5233
Sager 5270

Far Cry, AA: 4x, AF: 8x, 1024 x 768

XPS Gen 2 (HotHardware.com) 79.97
Sager 67.85

Other than that I can't find anything to directly relate. So I'm not sure how anyone can say they are dead even without benchmarks that are comparable.

When I said devours it I meant overall, cmon man I mean my sager had autocad 2004, Archicad 8, Photoshop7, 3d viz 4, Artlantis 4 and all microsoft office programmes open, and I couldnt bog it down, while the xps was struggling with autocad 2004, microsoft word and crashed when we tried to open photoshop.
In games I agree its pretty damn good, but not so good as to spend that kinda money on it. My NP9860 cost me 2600euros inc shipping with 2 day delivery, while a Dell xps would have cost me almost 5000euros for the top model, and the spec on that didnt even come close to the spec I have on the 9860.

i went for the 9880 coz it ha the 64 bit also..and im not so interested in mobility but that would be gr8 to find on the 9880

you have no clue waht your tlking about the pentium m is a faster chip than the pentium 4 you should ahve never asked it in the sager forums of coasre they are goign to tell you to get the sager. DUHHH!!!!! If you want to have a truth ful asnwer ask people in the notebook general section they would mostly liek give you truthful answers. The xps will crush the 9860 in almost anything. DId i tell you that the 9860 is slower than a pentium m 1.4ghz on battery. NO and did i tell you the fans run max and u barely get 1 hr of battery life wow just for a few seconds faster in rendering which is proably untoice you would rather chose the sager. Honeslty sager is who would ever built pentium 4 even intel said them selves they are going to be put out of prodction soon. Get ready for dual core pentium M! and for the 64 bit thing hahahah it proably wont go mainstream for at least 5..7+ years! HAhaha did i mention that the sonoma is faster than any turion and ais as fast as on amd 64 3400+ in most apps. Truly i love sager as i am thinking of buying my thrid laptop from them but no way is it goign to be a pentium 4. And you may be thinking im a fanboy of intel ahahhaha ur dam wrong i heosnlty hate them! I jsut use pentium m on my notebook becuase it runs the coolest and the fastest. I would chose amd any day! well that what my dekstop runs!

So my current laptop that is a Pentiumn 4 Mobile 2.0Ghz (about 1.5 years old) would be faster or as fast than the Sager 9880 3.6Ghz 2MB I'm currently looking at?

yes you dam are right well when on battery that is. Hoenslty its not sgaer as they are an excellent company and would chose them any day for gateway but thye jsut dont offer such thin good looking noteboosk as gatey offers that m680 is just out of this world! BUt yea even if you are just always goign to be plugged in why not get a desktop and as soon as you unplug that cord its slower than a pentium m 1.4ghz XPs 2 is the way to go honeslty!

The M is good for some things (like gaming), the 4 for other things (like video encoding).

This Tom's Hardware Guide report pretty much sums it up.

All bias aside, where would I go if I want an answer with good spelling and grammar?
