IF ANYONE KNOWS how to get the extigy to recognize a 5.1 dolby digital signal with a spdif line in (or why its not working, please let me know)

I've included a reply to another post in another thread which will shed some light on my problem.

DOes anywone know if the sound card has anything to do with max volume of the speakers. I was gonna get the sound blaster extigy but if it does not make a difference i might not get t because that would be a waste of 100+ dollars. anyone know if getting the extigy will allow my speakers to play louder than the current ac97 sound in the 8890[/quote]

Ryan, YES IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I have just been experimenting here. I hooked my Koss 4.1 speakers up through the on board front/rear set up and they sounded like crap and the volume was POOR and yes, I did have every volume meter at the top (took me a while to realize that you had to click "advanced" on the volume bar ITSELF to get the line in port to actually OUTPUT).
The reason I tested this was because I couldn't / can't get my 5.1 to work through spdif IN on my EXTIGY. I've run the xbox through the extigy stand alone alot with these speakers and had NO trouble with surround going into the OPTICAL input on the extigy.
However, using the spidif port out on the 8890 (there is no optical out) to the extigy, I can ONLY GET the extigy to output in the front speakers for some reason.... the Dolby Digital light on the extigy will not come on, to indicate a 5.1 signal from the 8890 spdif port.
HOWEVER TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. I found that front only with the extigy not only sounds WAY BETTER but is WAY LOUDER than using the AC-3 on the laptop. I've decided that the sound is so much better even without the surround, I'll use the fronts only with the EXTIGY rather than get poor, low volume (albeit surround) sound with the on board AC-3.
BUT IF ANYONE KNOWS how to get the extigy to recognize a 5.1 dolby digital signal with a spdif line in (or why its not working, please let me know)
