IF ANYONE KNOWS how to get the extigy to recognize a 5.1 dolby digital signal with a spdif line in (or why its not working, please let me know)
Bob
I've included a reply to another post in another thread which will shed some light on my problem.

QUOTE]and the final note, i am using the 8890 sound chip in its 5.1 channel mode. I myself have a question though. DOes anywone know if the sound card has anything to do with max volume of the speakers. I was gonna get the sound blaster extigy but if it does not make a difference i might not get t because that would be a waste of 100+ dollars. anyone know if getting the extigy will allow my speakers to play louder than the current ac97 sound in the 8890[/quote]

Ryan, YES IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I have just been experimenting here. I hooked my Koss 4.1 speakers up through the on board front/rear set up and they sounded like crap and the volume was POOR and yes, I did have every volume meter at the top (took me a while to realize that you had to click "advanced" on the volume bar ITSELF to get the line in port to actually OUTPUT).

The reason I tested this was because I couldn't / can't get my 5.1 to work through spdif IN on my EXTIGY. I've run the xbox through the extigy stand alone alot with these speakers and had NO trouble with surround going into the OPTICAL input on the extigy.
However, using the spidif port out on the 8890 (there is no optical out) to the extigy, I can ONLY GET the extigy to output in the front speakers for some reason.... the Dolby Digital light on the extigy will not come on, to indicate a 5.1 signal from the 8890 spdif port.

HOWEVER TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. I found that front only with the extigy not only sounds WAY BETTER but is WAY LOUDER than using the AC-3 on the laptop. I've decided that the sound is so much better even without the surround, I'll use the fronts only with the EXTIGY rather than get poor, low volume (albeit surround) sound with the on board AC-3.

BUT IF ANYONE KNOWS how to get the extigy to recognize a 5.1 dolby digital signal with a spdif line in (or why its not working, please let me know)

Hate to add a "ditto" but thats my problem too. And I have not been able to get the SPDIF to work with my other digital equipment. I did some research and I emailed Sager about it but so far no response(I just asked yesterday).

solution

Hey, with the help of Sager tech, I found the problem, sort of.
To get 5.1 from the spdif when watching dvds, you have to use
Intervideo WinDVD4 (came with pc). When you open it, right click in the window, go to setup, then audio. You will see a choice to check spdif... presto, now you can play dvds with 5.1.
However, its stupid that Windows media player 9 (for pities sake) and the other players I have (Interactual player) do not offer this option.
I'm still however, trying to get it to work for gaming (only used tron 2.0 so far)
small steps....
