Portable Video Editing Station

Thread Starter
Hey, I've been spoiled by a Panasonic Toughbook R1 (2.2 lbs); it has been the *ultimate* in portability and durability. However, I am moving and will be selling my desktop and my R1--I do design work, and need to find a replacement system.

I'm trying to find a reasonably portable solution that will let me edit video and do design work (illustrator, photoshop, etc).

I'm hoping to end up with something under 5lbs (4.5 or less would be even better!) and hopefully less than $2000.

Other requirements:
NOT A MAC
must have firewire & usb 2.0
prefer option to buy with 7200rpm HDD
1GB RAM
durable is good
I run Linux when I'm not working, so having Nvidia (or anything) other than an ATI graphics card is a plus (tho not really a requirement)

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'd honestly rather sacrafice performance for portability here. It'd be better to *always* have it with me (I like to work out of the house) than to have a powerhouse machine that weighs 6+ lbs.

Big time thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Feel free to ask on the linux forums as well here if people have experience, a good number of notebooks been reviewed or tested over there

Heh as a post script, while I dont tihnk it is under $2k, the toughbook 51 may work for you, but I havent used toughbooks before, but I do want to at some point, maybe if they come out with a turion model I know there are third party support for the toughbooks, for things like XServers and such, but much past that I cant help you much, sorry. I am personally waiting for the turion chips(Hopefully the dual core turions in the notebooks before I buy another audio notebook, went with a Powerbook for my current one and enjoy it immensly, but like you I run linux, and prefer linux for my audio and I prefer to do that on a PC. To bad I havent found the same quality in a PC notebook though.

I would suggest the Dell I9300 it is one of the best laptops out there. It is not very portable but has a great hardrive and great processor. If you want something alittle bit smaller i would go with the Dell I6000 which is basically the same but a dif. video card and a 15 inch screen instead of a 17.
