Just Bought An Acer 8104 Wlmi One Week Ago And I Got Only One Thing To Say........MARVELOUS....

I reinstalled My Windows Xp the same day and i got an overall speed improvement(got rid of all the shit stuff preinstalled)
just one problem.....screen shows a fuzzy red-green colour afer installing the chipset drivers(even the stock one) but it happened only once an after the vga drivers all was ok.....

drivers used......:
chipset : intel inf 7.01 drivers on intel site
vga : stock
wifi : stock
audio : 5.10.00.5125 on realtek site
modem : stock
all others ....: stock

One thing, the modem will be only seen by windows when installing the audio drivers as it is ( i suppose ) located on the sound card or integrated in it..

For The wifi......
Using a netgwear WGU624 a/b/g (amazing router) and it is working wonderfully with my baby...
the intel pro set is so good as it changes automatically from 5ghz to 2.4ghz when i exceed the range for the a network..
If you wanted to know the g network has a greater range than the a one but is more sensible to interference as other devices used formely the 2.4 band as my cordless phone, my logitech rumblepad2 and some ovens... but still my acer signal up technology and the xr technology found in my router keeps me connected all the time even at slow signal....

for the vga.....
Ati X700 = power and mobility
when on batteries the card automatically runs on low power and underclock itself for greater mobility and battery life...
Using The Stock Drivers at full power = 17247 in 3dmark 01 SE (Not That Bad)

Mouse..
Using a microsoft intelimouse explorer for bluetooth on a transparent icemat and got to say that it works extremely well with the integrated bluetooth and
sold the included microsoft bluetooth adapter to regain some money ..

Firefox 1.04 And Opera 8.01 opens like it was never closed even on batteries
at the slowest speed...the screen is good but all say not the best (the brightness is well enough for me ) even at 0% i can read perfectly what i am writing now in a poor liight....amazing.....

Batteries
the batteries stands for 4 hours as it says on the website when running 40% brightness and lowest cpu setting i.e about 798Mhz and only wifi on.....

Cpu
The systems is really fast and sometimes i don't have to upper the cpu speed. The 798Mhz at lowest cpu speed seems enough for everyday tasks (forget about gaming).it seems that even at that speed, the 2mb cache and 1 Gig Memory is handling the heavy duty task of the processor very well as i don't see any lag in processing multiple web pages and running some winamp with wifi and bluetooth on..

Is It Value for money ????
Of Course Yes.....
You Could Get Cheaper but i don't mind now....
Already bought it and got no regrets.....
A Very Well build notebook and great performance....

got my 8104 for two month now and the first problems start kicking in. got connections problems with my lcd - doing funny things every now and then. i also sometimes refuses to turn on after pushing the butten, have to unplug and put the battery out in order to get it started again.
i do think that the performance of the system is great and that it is good value. only disagree with the "well build". since acer is expanding very fast latly i am not surprised they lowered their build quality.
still.. glad u are happy with ur laptop - just don't forget to get the additional 3 year warrenty.

cheers
gernot
(ps - thinking about getting the samsung x50 2000 now)

Media card reader

can someone tell me if they have used the integrated media card reader ????
I've used it with both SD cards and MS Duo cards. SD works perfectly, but MS Duo support is flakey. 90% of the time it will blue screen, unnacceptable really.

I've also had a similar problem to gernot, except it wasn't straight from turning on, the laptop would completely turn off out of the blue, and couldn't be turned on apart from doing what gernot said.

why does there seem to b so many problem with the 8104??? if it switches itself off out of the blue, then it sure sounds a bit dodgy. dunno if i sud get one now.

Well regarding the MS duo thing.

If you look specifically, it's not really suppose to be working with MS Duo...

It workswith MS, MSP But not specifically MS Pro duo.

It sucks, I know. Most of my equipment runs of MS Duo.

Look around the internet, you can find Duo adapters.

clicky

My Acer 8104 has to be shipped in for repair service. The color is on the fritz and I have to slap the case hard to get rid of the psychedelic color patterns that pop up all the time. And Acer's repair facility, it turns out, is in Temple, TX, so keep this number handy: 1-800-816-2237, because you'll need it.

I can't wait for someone else to come out with a better notebook. BTW, I'm a member of the media, and it's amazing how shitty Acer treats us, so good luck!

Check out the support section. There is now a driver update that allows the MS duo's to work.

That wasn't really the problem...it's not like we were trying to stick in our MS Duo's without it BSOD'ing. It BSOD when we tried inserting the two pieces together...

I too suffered a lot of the fuzzy green/red/etc when installing my win xp. noticed it occured quite often on reboots, and sometimes the laptop would not boot up at all. Now I'm having the problem that my modem won't get initialised cos it seems my sound drivers aren't getting initialised on bootup(mostly cold boots), with me having to restart quite often. Anybody else suffering this problem? its occurring with the stock drivers from acer, the d/l realtek drivers, and also microsoft's HD audio driver (i uninstalled the acer/realtek stuff to see if windows would pick it up)..

Does it BSOD after you put it in or after you try to load it?
