Averatec and Laptops

Thread Starter
Okay about 6 months ago I bought my first Laptop a Averatec 5110HX, refurbished from Tigerdirect. Well it was great until 4 months went buy and the monitor got a big color stripe. Then the internal network card died. It only had a 3 month warranty so no dice there. Well the monitor has died completely, actually cracked when I tried tweek it like I had in the past to make the color bar go away for a week. MY FAULT. SO I need a new laptop, and have no idea what to get, has anyone else had bad luck with Averatec's new stuff. I did buy refurbished. I travel alot so weight is a factor, but I like the big screen as well, I play a few games but not a huge gamer and use it for work, I.E. MS Office, Access, etc. and I surf the net alot wireless at airports, etc. and LAN so that is important as well. I like the specs on the Alienware BUT not sure I need that power. Has anyone else had any experience with refurbished stuff? Did I just get a bad one or should I stay clear?

Thanks for any help

i assume if we're talking mobile alienware, you mean the sentia. it is also known as uniwill 233iio, not a bad laptop, check it out.

Averatec is generally pretty good for the money, you just had a bad unit. Try your luck with a new one. Or, if you want something else, check out the Compal CL56, it is REALLY cheap these days and will do all you said and even throw in some gaming in ther (ATI 9700 128mb will pull of many of the latest games at respectible settings)

My advice is: don't buy refurb product unless either:
  • you are seriously short on dough
  • you know exactly what the reason for return was, and are sure it won't figure in future operations
