Reoccurring Virus

Thread Starter
Hi, in January I purchased a hp zv5000 and after a month or two I got a virus that was eating my hard drive space like crazy (about 50 GB in a couple hours). I cleaned my hard drive and got rid of it. But then a couple weeks ago, I got the same kind of virus. I have a Zone Alarm Pro firewall and a trial for Norton Antivirus. I also run Ad-Aware and Microsoft AntiSpyware at least once a week. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me a way I could avoid getting the virus again without having to pay the $60 (I think, it might be $40) for Norton Antivirus. I did notice the last time I got the virus it was the first day after Norton Antivirus expired. And this might be stupid, but is there a way that my computer could be tagged in some way, so that when it's unprotected something goes onto it?

I'm kind of computer illiterate, just letting you know in advance. Oh, and I don't open weird e-mails or download music.

Try removing the virus manually...Symantec has instructions on how to remove the viruses without the use of an antivirus...

BTW, Which virus did your laptop get infected with?

Dude get NOD32... If you are having problems with any virus, thats what you need... Its like $50, but i recommend it highly, if you have a virus on your computer it will remove it...

Also i would like a copy of that virus too... I also like to experiment with virus scanners...

I second that on AVG Personal Edition. It is a very good antivirus program. It will actually catch more viruses than Norton and its free. The pro version you would have to pay for though.

If your norton anti virus is expired renew it and get the updates. Turn OFF your XP restore and then run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN. Some virus's hide in restore and are able to regenerate, So i've heard. Also try www.aluriasoftware.com for your spyware remover. Supposed to be the best 29.95. Free is ok but don't expect the best.
I use McAfee Internet security 6.0 about 39.95. Firewall, Virus, privacy suit and spam killer all in one.

AVG is good, but the main and most important problem with this freeware program is that it only detects viruses once they are already inside your system - unlike paid anti-virus programs that detect viruses prior to having your system infected (i know this from experience, i used AVG for a couple of months, got infected more than enough, and finally bought mcafee which got rid of all my worries)

as to having your system infected right after the day your norton expired - you have to understand that viruses and other malware (spyware, worms, trojans) are constantly and heavily circulating around the net. the fact is that once your computer recognizes you have an internet connection on - it is prone to viruses right away. thus the failing of your norton and the subsequent virus infection is not only logical, it is very probable and in some cases almost guaranteed.

my best advice for you is to reformat your whole system and purchase a suitable anti-virus - this is worth the money, believe me. whether you go for norton, or mcafee or any other brand - it's up to you.

cuz to me, this sounds like a problem that you cannot afford to ignore and cannot possibly hope to resolve just by using freeware programs such as AVG.

well, i hope this helped, good luck to ya!
