Temperature under linux - Page 2

It's probably done at a bios/firmware level. I've seen Compaq/HP do that before.

I agree... But when have you seen HP to that? I have been using them for over 10 years and have owned over 20 laptops they have built, and never have i seen them do that...

My most recent HP had a problem with thermal sensors and using algorithims similar to what was described. Really the moment the Fan kicked on it reported a jump of 20+ degrees of temperature, no matter what the actual temperature was. It tended to depend on the fan speed more than anything, and had some other factors in it as well I am sure, very inefficient, however other OSes would read the temp at a more stable level, so they just had a weird way of reporting the actual temp on that one, not ignoring it alltogether.

Seablade

PS That particular cooling system SUCKED and that laptop overheated a lot. But mainly things like thermal sensors and cooling come down to the ODM, not nessecarily the name on the laptop, they are just the people that warranty it

Yeah it was the first AMD presario/EVO N115 series. At the time they were still Compaq. There was no SMBus address that was addressable by any OS.

HP just doesnt normally plan for most notebooks to work in linux, their attitude is if it doesnt ship with linux its not supported... which is understandable...

That had nothing to do with support, I am fairly sure it had much more to do with a VERY poorly designed cooling system. The intake and exhaust ports and the single fan were all in one corner of the laptop, and not really close to either the CPU or the video so it really wasnt doing a lot of good. Even with a seperate fan on the bottom of the notebook(Both Targus and Antec) it still overheated.

The sensor support may have been cruddy, but the cooling system was a much larger problem.

1) I was talking about sensor support...

2) with HP laptops they dont strap fans to the video card/cpu, they use a large finned heatsink which is effective... its possible that you got a unit that has a heatsink that is not properly installed...

Ummmmm speaking as a Compaq/HP certified repair tech, I can say for a fact that mine were not improperly installed. They all but recalled that series of machines. HP has since cleaned up thier act somewhat. I'm not bashing them at all. Hell they paid alot of my sallary. My company purchased HP/Compaq exclusively until that round of crap hit the streets. Hp replaced 8 of the 8 laptops we purchased from them twice. I replaced mine with my current Sager.

Yes they have had some problems with laptops lately, I.E., the zd7000 which has the worst cooling of all... but anyways, Heck Even i don't feel the love from HP anymore, the support is getting back to the standards that i expect but With my laptop i have a hard drive in my newest laptop (see sig) that is going bad... sent it to hp they said they would/did replace the hard drive but yet the Serial numbers are same... so they didn't replace the drive... I've not been happy with them lately and will be buying another laptop soon, i don't think it will be an HP... I think a sager, for the money i always fork out i might as well get a system that is well built...

I like to keep my Money with company's that have support in the US, & hp is moving more back to the US & Canada... I also like to support company's that employ people that i know...

HP is still a good company but their laptops in the last year have had real problems & the laptop repair divisions still suck... Desktops, Printers and Servers from HP still rock, In fact the next server that i will be ordering up for my department will be an HP Unix server because the support for such systems is unlike anything i have received from any company...

I only hope that with HP's new CEO there will be some real changes, i mean already there have been huge improvements...

BTW: Are you an HP CE or HP Internal?

I work for a reseller www.cpgreeley.com, for the last 7 years. I have done some contract work for HP here in Colorado never as a "real" employee though. I have a gaming buddy that does tier 2 server support for HP. I must say that the server side of the house is much better than thier desktops/laptops.

Cool... You buddy Hardware or Software Support? I was Just in CO on business, I saw the HP building in Avora or what ever that town is...

Thread Starter
To the re-rail this thread a bit, I'm getting the impression that this 11 celcius is more a feature than a malfunction, since I know many who have the same problem and none who hasn't. As Ivar told you, I'm using the latest BIOS and it does not help a bit, bummer.

New Bios 1.10 is available for this model (uniwill 223ii0)!

Someone on uniwill forum told that the cpu temperature is shown correctly now!
