g20 concerns

Bought a g20 a week ago and since i don't like the media center edition of windows i stuck windows xp on there, didn't like it either. I settled with windows 2000sp4 and debian on there and i have since the switch i've been unable to play any dvds or and video files in general on the windows os.

All codec packs installed - dx9 installed and nvidia drivers from toshibas page are all on there - is this laptop not compatible with win2000? do i have to install a xp variant in order to have some semblance of media functionality?

Hmm... I have the G20, but curious as to why you would want to go to win 2K, but hey your preference.

From I know of, Toshiba does offer the drivers individually for win 2k.
But I do not believe they have engineered this AVPC for win2k specifically.

you need to install the Sonic software that came with it and the InterVideo stuff as well, from the recovery disks. It's a dual layer burner too, so you need the right software/drivers for it.

edit: not sure if it will work on windows 2000 but worth a try

yeah i think that this machine was not designed for win 2000, and i would say that you try those things but you may be stuck having to use xp or media center (just xp with add-ons)...i believe it was designed with those in mind.

Good news, found my own solution. Using vmware workstation i installed a virtual install of xp and media functionality works in it. Click of a button and i can have xp for when i watch tv shows and then shut it down and continue to run win 2000.
