For those who have the 9300, I was wondering how many people who ordered a non 7.2k rpm hard drive whether it be 40, 60, or 80gb, how many got a 4.2k rpm drive and how many got a 5.4k drive? I was wondering what the odds were because I really dont want to be stuck with the 4.2k. If the odds are really that bad, then Ill just get the 7.2k one to be sure I dont get the bad one.

I got an 80GB/4.2K originally, but had Dell ship me a 5.4K replacement. Dell's order details page says 5400RPM when you order, so if they ship you a 4.2K one you can get them to ship you a 5.4K replacement.

So you just call them up and say you want the 5.4k one? When they give you the replacemnet, do they install it or do you? DId they charge?

I just chatted with them and told them that my order details said 5.4K but I received a 4.2K, and they shipped me a replacement. They shipped it directly to me with a prepaid label to return the 4.2K one. No charge, unless you don't return the original drive.

Thanks.

my stories the same thing as BlastTyrants. I ordered the 80 gig and my online invoice said 5.4k but they sent me a 4.2. So i called them and i recieved the replacement in a couple days. I just switched the harddrives and sent the 4.2k one back. Pretty easy

I ordered the minimum 40GB since I had a 100GB 5.4 already and would just swap it out. I received the 5400RPM 40gig drive.

I have the 4200rpm drive. Can anyone tell me where on order details it said 5400 rpm please?

Did you guys call and have yours swapped under return policy, or was it later? I've had mine for a couple months.

you can check it using Support on their website, enter your service tag and click "Original system configuration" or something like that. There, look for the hard drive, it should say something like "80GB HARD DRIVE,I9300 (5400RPM)"

Nice infromation to know! My build sheet says that I will recive a 5400rpm drive, now I will have to open it up and look. Darn , I was hoping I would not have to call tech support. But I will must likely have to anyway for the XP disk.

Ordered an 80GB, and I got a Hitachi 5400 RPM model. Pretty happy with it, it's quiet and quick enough for my needs. Looking at one of those new 100GB 7200 RPM's, though, for a future upgrade.

When you look at Original System Configuration, it's going to show what actually shipped in your laptop. What I'm talking about is the order status: log into your account, click Order Status, click on Shipped next to your order number, click View Your Single Order Status Page, then click the link at the top that says something like I9300,PM 750(1.86GHZ). The list you see here should say something like 80GB HARD DRIVE,I9300 (5400RPM).

I got mine replaced while I was still under the 21-day return window, so I'm not sure what they'll say since you've had yours for a couple months.

Just wondering.. I ordered the 60G 7200rpm drive which is simply displayed as "341-180660GB HARD DRIVE,7.2K,I9300" on the Order Status page. Anyone know what MFG it is? Western Digital, Hitachi, Fujitsu?? Thanks!

I think the 7.2 k drive is a Hitachi.

My 80 GB 5.4k is as well btw...

My invoice shows that I will receive a 5.4k 80gb drive, ordered may 25th.

Hard drive speed

How do you check the speed of the hard drive?

Thanks

Log into your Dell account and under Support select "Original system configuration". It should tell you but if it doesn't you can either check the drive itself once you get it or call Dell and ask. This was answered above in Posting # 9

Is there even a point of me ordering the 7.2k rpm hard drive over a 5.4k one?
