whats with alienware?

wow guys, have you bothered to see what alienware is doing this days? nothing. AW is like frozen, they dont have the ultra they dont have the latest P-4's with 64bit support. whats the deal? its not that I care for them, I'm the happy owner of a xps 2 but sager and AW are basically the only other options out there that can "compete" with our systems(notice the cuotes) it would be sad for AW to go stagnant and all those AW owners to have to remain with outdated systems, I just hope that company pull's trough for them.

There will always be people that buy from companies like that no matter what. They like the idea of the small company. I think they are in deep do do though. With companies like Dell waking up to the fact of how much money is in the high end laptop/desktop market. Dell and other big companies will take all of the "bread and butter" buyers from the small ones. I really do think they are going to have a hard time from now on.

I do hope they say in business though. Someone has to push the big companies into providing better options.

Actually they do have the Ultra cards now. The AW and Sager are the same laptop made by Clevo. They just wait for Clevo to upgrade the laptop and then they can offer the upgrades.

nope, AW doesnt have the ultra, I know they are all the same barebones computer wih different offerings from the companies that make em, but the question is, can I go to the AW page and order a machine with the ultra? I think you cant, now what you said is partially true, they could just go trough sager and get a ultra that way, and a p-4 with 64 bit support too, hell they could get a new case too, but what im saying is, that its not dealing with AW, thats sager, besides that voids the waranty, so I still say unless AW does something, its like they want to loose the customers they have, they might not say so, but the current AW owners will probably get a XPS gen 3 when the next generation of laptops come or a sager xxxx because they already lived with a AW machine and even tough they defend AW now, they know they are the company laging behind between sager-AW-dell. by the time AW has a new "upgradable graphics" machine their current customers wont probably believe them because they have failed on that behalf twice now(failed to provide the 6800 Ultra and Failed to provide the 9800 before) In case they do get the ultrain lets say 2 weeks( I dont think so) its still the last company to do so, What I mean is, that I feel AW is laging behind and its gona loose its current customers because of it.

edit*: I seem to have been mistaken, AW already sells the ultra with their systems, kudos for AW. Could someone tell me now whats the deal for their customers to upgrade to the ultra?, is there a mobo swap needed like with the sagers?

Check out the configure page for an AW7700... YES you can get the Ultra. EDIT: I stand corrected : You just did .

AW, like others will decline as the big retail boys get on the bandwagon. I think companies like Dell (and others) simply got tired of getting beat-up by these higher end products. Additionally they see $$$ and exposure in offering competing products.

Since companies like Dell have resources vastly greater than companies like AW, its just a matter of time before AW (and others) can't keep up with the tech pace and pricing pressures.

I think its difference in Taste mainly.
AW obvoiusly are alot better looking and are built for a different breed of people.
The Aw's offer more power but less mobility and better eye candy.

Also buying an Alienware and with owning an Alienware there is somethign to be said. All those who havn't owned one *i havn't either* i don't think would get it.
Sure you soop up a honda civic but it'll never be a porshe.

Also someone could say this in reverse and ask why Xps hasn't jumped on the dual hard drive train? And you say cause it eats power...but yet its more powerful is the counter arguement. This is the same with the p-4 but the p-m is partially understandable

Their is nothing special about AW looks. I had a 7700 for 4 weeks all it has is blue glowing eyes and some rubber grips. Other then that it is plain old retangular "LEAD WEIGHT". The XPS2 has style to it witht he new LCD back cover with a techy Aluminum finish and the clear snap on cover, two tone trimming etc.

The only thing AW is concerned about is 6 monmths ago PC Gamer rated their laptop best gaming laptop and they stick that buy the picture on their website. When that "TITLE" expires then they will make some changes to get ONE more best foi show title and die off again till needed. Theythink that is all they need in their minds to be the best out their.

From owning a top fo the line 7700 to the XPS2 I can say the Dell is by far a better ocmpany to deal woth and makes a product much more technological advanced than the 7700, period.

why would you want dual HDs in a laptop? If you want dual HDs, get a big bag, stuff your desktop PC, and an LCD monitor into it. You'll have about the same portability, and better upgradeability. do you know what happens when you use RAID 0, and one of your 2 HDs dies?
Yeah the whole dual drive thing is such a joke IMHO. If I want raid I will get a Kick arse desktop machine, hopefulyl one with Dual Core.

I have an Alienware Aurora 7500 sli system on order and a dell i9300 on order too.

I had the 7700m from AW but returned it. Like someone else said theres just that "mystique" from owning a system from a company like AW, Falcon NW or Vodoo that you don't get from a Dell. I'll give the XPS all the credit it deserves. I would of liked to of gotten one after I returned my 7700m to compare but I could only get credit from AW.

It's like my harley. There are a bunch of more relaiable, faster, even better looking bike's out there but in the end their still not "harley's".

I'm looking forward to both systems a lot. I'm worried about the screen on the 9300 but if it looks like the AW 7700m's does I'll be more than happy.

And about AW going out of buisness. They won a huge contract over dell to supply computers to the goverment. I think this is when AW went downhill in quality control and service but from a financial standpoint their here to stay for awhile.
Anyone can win a governement contract. But the government will be the first to pull theiur contract when AW doesnt deliver on service and support. Its just as easy to loose government contracts as it is to win them.

Plus Dell sells 100 machines to everyone one of AW. The plant I am in charge of has over 4500 Dells in house. We are a worldwide company and buy Dell exclusive.

I did try to bring some AW laptops in for our mobile engineers but I could not in good faith and fear of loosing my job for suggesting a 7700 after my experience. So I ordered 1500 M70's.
Since your posting in here do you happen to have a 9300?
I'm curious how the screen compares to the 7700m's.

EDIT: I see you own the XPS. Is the XPS screen the same one on the upgraded 9300's?
I believe they both have the same WUXGA displays either LG, or Samsung. The display quality is luck of the draw really, even though the complaints have quieted down. I'm pretty sure the Clevo display is pretty good, but I don't know how it compares to Dell's..

The things you wanna look for are sparkles, and light leakage.. actually.. don't look for them.. lol don't even search to see what they are if you don't know already. If you notice them they will bother you, if you don't look for them, or don't see them, you'll probably love the display after tweaking with the colors, and color temp.

I have a LG 1920x1200 screen. IT is absolutley beattiful. Great thing no dead or stuck pixels and if their were Dell would replace it. My 7700 had 4 stuck pixels, but they were outside of their so called zone so I was screwed.
This sparkle thing people are talking about is mostly crap in my opinion. The LG's from what i have seen has very little light leakage and this sparkle thing I can not see personally and i am staring at my XPS2 screen for 12-14 hours a day.
LGs are ok just because some of us got shitty screen doesn't make them all bad
