New to Apple

post #1 of 16

I am looking to get the smallest possible apple laptop. For the cheapest price.
I don't really need it to be powerful at all. would this be the powerbook G4?
If so any ideas in getting one for the least amount of money?
Are there special coupons rebates or deals that apple comes out with?

its 1,500 on there website. But i was wondering if there was anything smaller? or maybe even a Pc smaller. Just looking for the smallest possible laptop that can do email word processing, adobe, and browsing the web.
Anythoughts would be much obliged.
Thanks

If you don't need it to be powerful at all and for the cheapest price, then you should consider the iBook G4. The 12" is priced at $999.

It can do email, word processing, adobe, and browsing the web.

There are pc-based units that are smaller than the iBook 12" or the PowerBook 12". Toshiba makes one(Libretto?) and I'm sure there are a few others out there...but they are relatively expensive, I think.

Yea... I wanted to the lightest one opssible and the powerbook looked smaller then the ibook

And from waht i've seen of the pc ones they in the 3,000-2,000 range so i'd much rather go with an apple there.

The 12" iBook is by far the most economical small Apple laptop.

The 12" Powerbook is slightly lighter though I think and may also be physically a little smaller. My father has one and it is a svelte little machine.

Either machine will pack more than enough punch for what you're asking for.

If you're looking for a deal though, the prices on new, current Apple product is very tightly controlled so there's nothing akin the Dell coupon breakouts. The way to bargain hunt for Apples is to look for refurbs.

I see its just in the configurator it says that "rebates" are not included in the price...So that made me think if there were any or not? i was lookign to try to spend a little less then 1,500?
ebay? maybe alot of scammers but?
Any other ideas?

Check Amazon.com. They seem to offer them with rebates...that's where my sister got her iBook from, with a rebate of about $150. Sometimes, it seems that the models they carry on Amazon differ slightly from the most current models on apple.com, but basically appear to be the same. Of course, you don't get to customize them if you go the Amazon route.

Also if you are an educator or a university student you can apply the education discount which is about 10% or so.

Ouchemoma,

If you want a cheaper 12" Apple powerbook, you may consider to purchase not the last model with 1,5 GHz processor but some previous one with 1.2 GHz or 1.33 GHz (I hope I remember the frequences right). They are just 1-2 years older but still available on the market (new ones, not refurbished). You don't need power, so you don' t care about the processor speed, so you are happy with a slighter older/slower/cheaper model. They look and weight more or less the same. I think in you case this option is better than the latest iBook (it's heavier).

sounds like the iBook would be a good fit for your needs.

PB = 4.6lb
Height: 1.18 inches (3.0 cm)
Width: 10.9 inches (27.7 cm)
Depth: 8.6 inches (21.9 cm)

iB = 4.9lb
Height: 1.35 inches (3.42 cm)
Width: 11.2 inches (28.5 cm)
Depth: 9.06 inches (23.0 cm)

the dimensions aren't much different, particularly the weight. if i were to pay the price premium for the PB i'd want it to be < 4lbs. the iB is one of the cheapest, fully equipped (optical drive), battery life, etc, 12" machines, i've come across. the averatecs have typically had pretty mediocre battery life, tho the PM ones might be a different story. the 12" models have also tended to feel a bit flimsy imo. my iB gets 3.5 to 5.5 hrs of battery life depending on use, usually around 4:15.

u could pick up a stock 12" ibook from amazon for $899 after $100 rebate. it most likely would be tax free as well as w/ free shipping. the price beats apple's academic pricing bc they charge $949+tax for their machines, making it $1k+. if u need a bigger hard drive and such, u'd have to build to order from apple however.
