So, what's your story?

I think most people would agree with me that today games aren't only great because of the inovations or game play. They are big pieces but no the biggest. The one thing that catches our attention is the story. I think we can thank the big companies like ID and so on about the stories. Quake 2 honestly got me pissed off when I first played through the processing plant for the humans. Human beings are being ripped apart for some evil aliens plan. Screw that! Half-life kept me glued to my seat to see what was next. The gov't is trying to wipe us out! Bullshit! Without an awesome story, and just being a guy shooting up a bunch of weird monsters for no reason wouldn't have cut it. The attention to detail and explaining why things were happening really made games like that. Not to mention the killer Multiplayer aspects that came from most.

With that in mind, I've yet to find a person who didn't have an opinion on which game had the best story and why. Might not be the one you liked the most, but everyone seems to have one that they ust love to replay once in a while because of the way the story goes. What was yours?

Mine is obvious, I've never hidden the fact that I'm a huge halo fan. The reason I do though is because of the way the story is and what it is about. It is about to what extent we are willing to go to to avoid war. How we can justify the loss and suffering of a few to try to save the many. We will make a group of super soldiers by kidnapping the best of the best, then training them to be the better of the best till finally only a handful of the 70 you start with are alive. They are ogmented and trained to stop a civil war. Go in covertly against incredible odds and beat them. Then, just before everything goes into affect, the covenant comes about. Now it is about survival. How quickly the tides change when youf ind a superior enemy. Now it's about true desperation and undying determination to beat them or go down swinging. It's about all the sorrows the world has faced and the pain these soldiers will endure to do their job. Most of all, it is a story that made me feel truly like failure just wasn't an option.

It is also the only story I know of that spawned a seriest of books to explain what happened before during and after the first game. Doom had a seriest but it really didn't follow the game in such detail. They have put so much effort and ideas into this that it is hard to not really love it. To me, this is by far the absolute best storyline I've ever played, ever.

You all got opinions on this, I'm sure. What story and why?

Luisure Suit Larry. And SIN. Cause they had (oYo) which is missing in most games today.

Well, a game I really enjoyed, that blew me away was Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I thought that Nintendo did a great job with the story line in that game (they usually work hard and bust a$$ on Zelda games anyway).

Doing stuff in the game had a purpose. Also, everything kinda worked off each other throughout the game, just because you were done with one area or thing didn't mean you were necessarily done with that area for the whole game. It wasn't a difficult game, but it was very enjoyable.

I know this isn't a revealation, because many people liked this game...but it's still one of my top picks for games with good storyline/play.

Leather Goddesses of Phobos, the old Sierra adventures, Leisure Suit Larry and System Shock 1 and 2, and HHGTTG, how could I leave that out.

BTW SIN had (oYo)? You learn something new every day.

Ahhhh, the gold old days of "Infocomm" I also nominate Leather Goddesse's of Phobos, played that right after Zork 1. And everything Sierra, except Police Quest, lousy story on that one.

Redneck Rampage

Made me laugh for hours cause of lines like:

"Time to get Liquered Up" displayed instead of the usual "Loading"
"U like that boy ?"
"Hold on to yer butt!"

It wasn't the best game play, but much like Duke3D, "Damn, I'm lookin good !!" , I kept playing just to hear the riddiculous lines.

Pretty much anything Final Fantasy. The Splinter Cell series, just because Tom Clancy is an awesome writer and the way things pander out is completely believable.

I remember when Aliens vs Predator 2 first came out . Playing as a Marine was pretty creepy and the other races were fun too , kinda refreshing how the story lines of all three races intertwined . Now if only they would make an avp3 in the source engine , that would be sweet .

Total war = total immersion!!!

The truly great games don't spoon feed you stories but they buy the groceries and let you create your own meal! I play through the great shooters like Doom3 and HL2 and love them, don't get me wrong... Its just that I rarely go back and do it all again because they're yesterday's papers, books I've read and movies I've already seen, etc. The Total War series are so insanely in depth and intricate that you have new experiences YEARS after you buy the games. I must have played Shogun:Total War for two years straight and I still haven't won as a Christian with all of the clans, on the expert level... Medieval:Total War was a work of art, 'nuff said. BUT Rome:Total War is the icing on the cake >>> words can't describe how wonderful this title is, so I won't even try... Just suffice to say that its games like these that rule the imagination and let you escape! My apartment could burn down around me and I wouldn't even look up if I was playing Rome!!!

final Fantasy 7 and the Halo Series. So far Halo2 gets the cake, but FF7 will always be favorite game of all time.

Always loved Zelda and always will.. When it hit 64 is when I think they really took off.

I like more strategy games like Homeworld and CivIII. I think so far with computer games Homeworld, Homeworld Cataclysm, and Homeworld 2 have to be my favorites hands down as far as story line goes. I just recently picked up Sid Meier's Pirate's, and so far have been very impressed with the game play and the freedom with deciding what to do, very cool game, graphics are cool, but the story line isn't extremely developed in the beginning of the game. I think that’s so you can create you're own story as you pass through the years.

Next one I want to get is Silent Hunter III. I enjoyed II and think the graphics in III will be worth checking out. Not much for story line, you're a u-boat captain.. go sink ships!

Quake, DOOM, Descent, Half Life, Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem, and yeah I liked Redneck Rampage.

But GL Quake was what really hooked me and all the add ons just cemented it in place.

What is GL Quake?

Leather Goddesses of Phobos I thought I was the only one who enjoyed that game. LOL

Battlefield 1942 (Forgotten Hope mod was the best, great multiplayer)
HL2 (great graphics but the zones need to open up, hate linear paths)
Rome -Total War (best battle strategy game out there now)
Throne of Baal (good RPG)

I can't always agree with making up your own story though. It's great to have a significant amount of freedom in a game, GTA being a big demonstration of that. Every company has tried to give you that option in some way or another. Halo gives you many ways to assault you enemy and also alot of different weapons combinations to choose from. Splinter cell vastly improved there "freedom" in the game by allowing you to truly have the fifth freedom. The first two didn't really have it, but this one does now. However, sometimes I compare playing games to reading a book. You get a reall good book you can't stop, you must keep reading. A good story does the same in a game, YOU MUST KEEP PLAYING.
