Sony VGN-S460 Fan Noises Killing me!

I can't even sleep with this piece of shit on. The fans go on and off, on and off! I'm furious. Is there someway I can stop it from going on and off? I want to keep it on 1 speed instead of changing ever 15 seconds!

Sorry bro, no way to fix the fan problem. I guess the best you could do is undervolt the processor (see the tutorial on these forums). At least that will make the fan alternate between off and lowest speed. Lets hope Sony releases a bios update to make the fan temps configurable...

Hey thanks for the reply but do you think you can link me to the site for underclocking. Also the laptop is so laggy.... I dont know why, but even running @ 1.73Ghz it seems very laggy, when I right click on the desktop it takes about 3 seconds for the box to jump out.

no u dont want to underclock you want to undervolt. When you undervolt you wont lose any prefromance. I bet you the reason why you having fan problems is because you have a bucnh of spyware. Go to spy sweeper and download it and its a 30 day trial. Undervolting it would make the fan hardly come on.

Reinstall windows.. I didn't have any problems with my S170's fan noise jumping all around.

It's not windows. I've been monitoring the temperature of my notebook and the fan goes on when it's over 55C, and shuts off when he's 55 or lower. Anyway to make it so it comes on @ 57C or 58C?

Hack the bios.

If I end up getting my s360, I will probably get some AS5 to drop the temps. That should help keep the fan off.

Actually 55°C is a very nice threshold. If on idle, your computer goes over 55°C, then you have a problem. And it's probably software-related; when right-clicking the desktop, the contextual menu should never take 3 seconds to appear.

I think it's time for a clean Windows install.

if your cutoff/on is at 55C, youre lucky...most of ours are at 40-41C

The Sonoma based S's must have a fan turn on at >55 degC. Just for reference, the older S's (S360, S270, etc.) have their fan turn on threshold at >40 deg C.

I really wish a bios guru could take a look at the bios' between the S460 and the S360 and figure how to manipulate the fan turn on/off temps.

seems like it's the problem with all new small laptops. I had Acer 3201 which is also considered to be thin & light with dedicated graphic card, but the fan noise was killing me, I returned it and got Fujitsu instead, the fan noise still there, but not nearly as loud as Acer, but it it has integrated graphics card

There's a program that I use for my Dell 8200 and 9300 called Fangui. Not sure if it'll work for a Sony laptop but maybe someone has tried it already??? Anyone? Anyone?

Fangui can let u set the temperature at which the fan turns on and off, it's a real handy util... my i9300 used to have the fan on ALL the time, now with fangui I was able to turn it off and have it turn on only when the system gets hot. So far no crashes, works like a charm...

is the cpu easly accessed? If it is you might want to check the thermal past. Also check to see if you hae any spyware running in the background. Download cpuz and make sure that the CPU is throttling down when idle http://www.majorgeeks.com/download425.html

It just doesn't sound right because i'm on my third P-M Dothan laptop and i've never had fan or sound problem.

A tutorial on undervolting. http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...t=undervolting

I've used "Centrino Hardware Control" to undervolt my Vaio S360. Now the CPU runs much cooler, and the fan hardly comes on any more.

See http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm
With Centrino Hardware Control you can easily control the hardware components of your Intel Mobile Notebook. Centrino Hardware Control helps you to:

-prolong the battery lifetime and cool down the system with CPU Voltage Control and ATI Clock Control.
-full processor speed control with custom dynamic switching and CPU Speed Control (CPU policy)
-monitor the battery charge level and system temperature.
-control and monitor the Hard Drive with S.M.A.R.T management, acoustic & advanced power management and Hard Drive temperature monitoring.
-reduce noise with Notebook FAN Control.
