but out in the real world/public i would not use that word in that manner because it might offend some people, even if they aren't "gay"....it is derogatory to some in the context that you used it in....

just a word of advice...
not to thread jack and not to be putting anyone down or anything like that, But i think people are just too damn sensitive anymore... everyone is so worried about being pc and not stepping on anyone's toes...if people would just learn to relax a little, i think the whole world would be a better place

hmm, I belelive that game basicly has its own OS, and could be creating a swapfile its self. I do not have it installed so I can't verify that. Have you looked through your processes list to see if there is another program using a lot of memory. I would also disable the swap and defrag the drive then try the game with swap off then with swap on.

Every single process uses alot of swap, no matter what my settings are for it.

btw - gay is a common slang word in the UK, it basically means stupid or annoying or something with that kind of connotation and dosen't really mean homosexual. If someone from the UK says that something is gay then it dosen't mean that they're particularly homophobic or anything.

I would say - get some more ram, or uninstall some programs etc etc. Beyond that simple stuff like defragging your HDD will help swap file performance.

Thank you. I didn't feel like writing all that so I just said "sorry".
The thing is that I don't want to spend 150$ on more ram and then end up with the some problem.

Its not ram, the game should use the ram you have then swap.

I would try creating a new account with admin privlages and see how it works there. If it works then go to your old accoutn and do soem house cleaning in the msconfig.

This account is admin... And I have reformatted 7 times the last few months and last time was last week.
The stutter in games/DVD is either related to the swap and disk activity OR the pentium m stuttering everytime it throttles and changes voltage.

What do you think?

The usage of Gay is the exact same around here. Its rapidly losing its association with homosexual. Everyone should remember, however, that Gay became slang for homosexual, and it originally meant happy, so I dont see why anyone should be offended.

You might try fiddling with your power profiles, setting the M to run at max all the time, and see if that fixes your issue. If it doesnt, we can rule out the proc.

not to be rude or anything...but would you go out in public, say a starbucks, barnes and nobles, or any other public place and say something outloud like..."that car is gay" or "the prices they charge are gay"...i would probably look twice if i heard that and find it quite offensive to be used in public....when the word "gay" is used in the context that it is, it has a negative connotation to it and some people may be sensitive to it since some view it as derogatory even if they aren't gay themselves.

i mean, would you call your friend a "retard" for doing something stupid or funny out in public? (i know ive called my friends that when i was younger)...how bout if there was a mentally disabled person 10 feet away, would you still do it?

anyways, everyone has their opinion, and I certainly respect that, im just expressing my opinion because ive noticed people being insensitive to me in public (probably unknowingly) with their negative usage of the words that describe my nationality/ethnicity...it has nothing to do with being politically correct however...

just my 2 cents

DVD doesn't stutter when set to max performance. But games still do.

Games didn't stutter at all in windows 2000 pro. But it didn't have support for dual head cards so... XP it is.
You're dual booting 2000 and XP?

No no.... I had 2000 a few weeks ago. Everything ran perfectly fine. I just couldn't get two monitors to work with my radeon so I installed XP.

Back to the whole memory thing.. Could it be that when you are back at the windows desktop it's unloading HL out of the RAM to the PF, but when you go back into HL it loads it back into RAM? Can you monitor how much memory the program is using while you are actually using it?
