why are you taking a steroypical name and put it in qoutes. Do you actually mean to say that it like the same gender? Because i didn't know that computers had a gender. I mean it is not like you can open the CPU and look to see if it has a ****ing penis or not. Or maybe you say that because you are homophobic and are scared of your own comp raping you. Learn a better vocab and pick better word in the future.

So, by this same line of reasoning, would you also consider yourself "gay" for only having 512MB of RAM when the common concensus is that 1024MB is the acceptable minimum for XP?

Why do so many guys seem to use the word gay as a put down for things? Insecurity? Just wondering. In the UK gays are gay too, although there are other words, too...

Anyway, I don't personally have too many problems with XP even though at work I have to use linux. I just change the titlebars and all to 20 pixel size or something like that so it is less cartoony. And I notice a difference on my 512MB machine compared to a 1GB machine when running stuff.

Just to back up, the word gay in the homosexual definition is slang itself. How do you think older people felt when the younger generation decided to change the meaning of a word that meant "happy" to coincide with homosexual, which at that time was even more of a taboo than now? Just chew on that for a bit.

Now can we drop the philosophical discussions of the ethicality of using the word gay in a sentence? You guys can start your own thread in the off topic section.

Now lets see if we can fix Bit's problem at hand. Bit, i've noticed in my system with 1 gig of memory, windows uses about 200 megs of page file, even though i have over half of my memory free. I think thats just what windows does.

I'm beginning to think your stuttering may be a video problem, rather than a ram issue, I used to run my desktop on 512, and played half life with no stuttering issues. Have you tried updating to the latest drivers?

I suspected that Bit, and I must say, you're pretty clever. Did you check the drivers?

heck, i wasn't giving "kudos" to the original poster and backing down from my position..i wasnt even trying to pick an "online fight", like you seem to be doing here...i was simply pointing out to him that a better word could have been used, just like all the other posters on this board..and was not trying to be rude in any way, just wanted to point out to him that a better term may have been used because some people may be sensitive to using the word in the context in which it as used. What did you want me to do? give him a bunch of ??? maybe that would have done the trick and showed him I was serious? give me a break...he said sorry and explained why he used the term he did and didn't seem to hold a gripe even though some posters were getting on him for the term used...that's fine in my book..

and by the way...i'm not defending the "gay" community just solely to defend it..i'm defending all minorities and words used to describe certain people, either based on nationality, race, sex, age, or any physical/external characteristic. I have found that too often in our society people are insensitive to other people based on their physical characteristics that they themselves have no control over.....

I hear if your HD is over 80% full it will run more slowly. Check how full and remove unnecessary data if possible. Get the HD below 80% then defrag and re-boot.

Download and install Speedswitch XP. Then set it to run at max performance all the time, which will force the CPU not to throttle up and down. See if this makes any difference.

Having 512 megs of ram should be plenty to do what you are doing, but you still havent told us anything you are running in the background. Another thing you can try is disabling ALL non Windows procs and services at startup.

I just checked, and every single port on my i9300 is female. So it could not be gay, but it could be lesbian. It cannot have intercourse with other female ports without some kind of gender changer or dongle. When you map a network drive, is that like Windows having a relationships with other computers? If so, my computer is apparently a real slut.

As far as memory is concerned, no matter how much memory you have Windows XP will swap certain memory contents, unless you set a certain registry value to tell it not to. I agree, the original poster should upgrade to 1gb, then set this registry value, then Windows XP will not be as gay, it will still be gay, but not as gay.

Oh yeah, and harddrive access will appear to get slower and slower as the drive filles up. Defagmenting will help somewhat. This is because as the drive files up, generally the data is written from the outside of the drive to the inside of the drive disk and the outside edge of the disk will read faster. Also, as the drive fills up related files will become more dispersed and defagmenting the drive will not solve this. Options are: get a bigger drive, clean off data from the drive and reinstall everything on a clean drive.

in actuality, the "gay" part of this thread was pretty much dead, and you seemed like you wanted to bring it up again..the point was made and it seems that your morning off, or your excess free time for that matter revived this thread..so who's really bringing "more" now huh buddy?

there are things in this world that some people believe are right, and some people believe are wrong, i personally believe that using the word "gay" to describe something that is bad or faulty is wrong, and if you want to disagree, then that's fine...i could care less about what you think...and its funny how you care so much about what i think

Yes, and perhaps some psycological software can help, as it could be a genetic issue with XP, perhaps going way back to Windows ME, which always was rather peculiar.
