Im going to college in the fall and own a 9300. I got a great deal on this laptop and love its screen and graphics power. However im worried about its size preventing me from using it in classes. With the 9 cell battery, will I be able to use this laptop for my college classes? Also i heard freshman really shouldnt bring laptops to class, is this true?

I never understood why people need to bring laptops to class. I always slept or took notes by hand.

How do you write down equations or figures on your laptop in class?

You ight have some problems because of the type of desks that are common in most college classrooms. They are usually the kind that are attached to the chair, and they just barely fit my i8600. So I'd say you might have some problems.

It really depends. I've used my laptop in classes such as computer programming and chemistry, but there are other classes like english and math where its not very useful. For some classes, the professor will put his notes on the web, so you can follow along with them on your laptop and not have to write them down.

i guess it pretty much depends on ur major and the type of courses u take. if u're thinking about taking any computer courses it would be very helpful.

If the 9300 has the option to throttle down the screen brightness and processor you may have no trouble with the battery but the size is another issue.

I use my 700m for Programming, webdesign, math, photography and photo editing. If there is an equation I need and don't have time to draw it directly on the computer I just use printing paper and scan it later. I like my notes to be searchable, I love onenote! And Convertable laptops/tablet PCs are perfect for math courses but who can afford one?

Depends on the desks. There are a few lecture halls on my campus (Case Western Reserve University) where a huge widescreen laptop will without a doubt fit. But for the most part you don't want that huge laptop in class.

Not to mention that bringing a laptop to class is a waste of money usually. You are going to browse, chat, etc. A while ago I discovered that I am paying about 80 dollars per lecture and decided not to waste my money by browsing the internet.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I bring a 700m with me everywhere I go.

Yeah the only thing I ever did with my laptop in class was mess around with it. Notes by hand with a binder is still the best way, and besides who really looks at their notes all that much after they take them unless there is a quiz or something ? I sure didn't. I graduated with a bachelor's in computer enginnering and all coding I did took much longer then was allowed in a 1 or 2 hour period.

I only had one class with a resonable size desk. All my other classes had stow away desks, kind of like the ones on planes, but smaller, lol. You might have some trouble since the 9300 is so big. You'll be able to have the notebook on the desk, but that's it.

its going to be a tight squeeze for most university desks, probably no problem in the labs unless you are taking soe really strange courses. the battery should be adequate but you are not going to be using it all day....cause if you are planning that get more batts or hope that you can find a plug. also remember that your lappy is not the lightest thing in the world, in my freshman year i carried like a 30+ pound bag when i included books and binders, so adding another 10pounds of laptop to that would have made it not so much fun to carry all the time.

i agree that hand notes are absolutely the best. a notebook is okay but you might have to learn to really type fast in order to get it all in. for a freshman i dont think you will use it as much unless you are going to be getting a portable printer for yourself too... otherwise it will be a great toy but not the most use for you in your first year. the farther that you go in your education the more usefull your lappy will become. a 700m or similary lappy is what i think would be probably the most useful for you cause it is smaller and lighter with a longer battery.

anyways my advice is to try it out, and see if it works for you, but be prepared for the likely outcome that it will be little more than a toy off the top and that you are not going to use it everywhere...

You also have to consider the noise that the laptop will produce. The 9300 is not only big, it is pretty powerful, and would generate a lot of heat. I used my 8600 in class a few times and several times the fan would come on, and it was really embarrasing. After that I stopped, because in a classroom it is much too quiet to use it. I have seem a 700m that a student in an older year has, and it is whisper quiet.

I attribute that to SENIORITIS! (Although I didn't have a notebook for classes, I managed to slack off in the few lectures I attended )

lol seriously can you be that DUMB to type up equations onto laptop in math course?...
its good for courses that takes just plain notes, for people like me, who can type a hell lot faster than writing, i have 8600, perfect portability and play video games!...(cough cough when class is 4 hours long!)
