CPU overheating like whoa!

Wow, I've heard of Prescott having issues with heat, but I haven't seen heat this intense since the AMD K7's. While playing 3D games, my CPU skyrockets to about 78 C -- about 180 F, which is extremely too hot. The CPU then throttles and the game play becomes choppy and unbearable. Anyone else having this problem, and if they are, any luck?

Thanks in advance.

Someone told me to update to System Bios Version 1.00.04 released on May 26, but this didn't help.

I tried running a CPU burn-in. Sure enough, the temperature shoots up to 77 C and then throttles...monitoring the CPU clock speed yields a drop in clock to ~2900 MHz from 3600 MHz.

if youve had your system for a couple months i suggest getting a can of compressed air or a air compressor (use it in burst cuz they can create condensation) and spray out the fans on the back, i took the covers off and sprayed out everything and it dropped my temps. I was getting temps arouund 70 via mob meter when i played games so i cleaned it out and it worked.

There are a lot of factors that can affect how hot a particualr 9860 runs. The most common is dirty vents/heatsinks. A good blast of canned air usually fixes that problem. Also room temp can have a huge effect on CPU temps. Other. less obvious things like having the lappy on an uneven surface that partially obstructs the vents or air flow can also impede cooling. Try raising the lappy an inch or so off the surface to increse air flow under it. Make sure that whatever you use to raise it doesn't block any air intake vents.

Thanks for the advice re: cleaning. I bought a can of compressed air and sprayed my laptop (although I couldn't figure out how to get the cover off.. I tried removing about 1,000 freaking screws, but I must have missed some). Anyway, I am running a burn-in test now to see what's going to happen.

While this test is running, I've got a story to share with you all. I go to the Staples cashier to purchase the compressed air, and she asks me to see my identification. I show her, she says okay, and she explains to me that they will not sell compressed air to minors (under 18). Anyone have a clue as to why?

This burn-in test has been cranking for about 10 minutes now... the CPU temp is holding steady around 65-66 C (~150 F)... still a little hot for my liking, but I can live with it. Thanks a lot for all your help, and if this starts acting up again, I will be coming back.

They wont sell compressed air to minors because little rebel 13 year olds have fun houghing things like C02. If your stupid enough to hough house hold products and die well then sell it to them and get them out of the genetic pool.

Back on topic: I was having similar problems. CO2 works but the best solution (which has been said) is to find the two main vents (the big exhaust vent on the far back and the processor vent on your left hand side) and unscrew the plates that cover just that area (it isnt that many screws if you just take off the one piece that covers the are your trying to get to). I had tons of gunk stuck in there and when I cleaned it out my lappy was much cooler. ~ Kray

Just don't hold it upside down while you do it - talk about brain freeze!
