M6811 - To buy or Not to Buy?

All this time, I was waiting for the 6811's to come down for it to have such a short lifespan.

Now, I can pick up a refurb for a reasonable price. Was there a problem with this machine besides the hindge cracks or is it still a good buy at $700-$800?

NO Buy. Never buy anything refurbish if I were you.

I would stay away from a refurb. They always have some kind of hidden defect.

Thanks,

I will not take the temptation - Maybe it is good that I waited! I still want a 64bit machine. What do you recommend?

In defense of...

Sorry Jeroplex if you have had a bad experience with Gateway. I have had 4 of them and I currently have a Solo 9550 in my arsenal and I love it. I have decided to sell it or my Thinkpad in order to reduce the cost of my new 64bit machine ( what ever it turns out to be ).

The Solo is my only consumer model where my other machines are all corporate businesss models and pound for pound, I will stack Gateway up there with the best of them.

I understand

I understand. As for Dell....bluch. Our corporate office decided to ditch our trusted Thinkpads for Dells and after 4 generations of COE roll outs, I can not understand why? We have had more problems out of those Dell machines and everybody hates them. Sure they feel good but their guts bust all over the place all of the time!

But I guess all things being equal - You can't expect perfection from things man made!

Well, My M6811 arrived today and I am taking it for a test run. Out of the box, I am impressed. The tactile feel of the keys and the machine is much sturdier than my C640 or any of my co-workers that have a later model Dell. ( I don't know the model off hand).

This is a smoking machine! I am definitely going to upgrade the ram now and the HD later.

I don't understand why GW took this sweet machine off of the market and didn't offer a GW model.

I picked it up from Mac Universe on the BAY and it looks brand new. No hinge cracks (maybe they were replaced). The only problem that I have is that I can't get the internal network card to work. I had to stick in a PCMCIA NIC. I hope it is only a driver because I don't want to send it back.

I will call MAC Universe tomorrow.

My laptop collection is about to get like my box of cell phones

Well, I'm totally satisfied with my eMachines laptop, both the machine an the support I've received since I bought it. On the other hand I will never own another Toshiba anything since the treatment I got from them. Now I can appreciate lies as much as anyone if they're clever lies. But the lies I got from Toshiba were just plain jane lies.

I stand corrected on the Gateway Athlon 64 models but you can't find them on their website! Obviously Gateway is not pushing them. They also come up listed as products sold in Retails stores. Is that ONLY in retail stores?

yes, only Retail. Gateway isn't selling any AMD processor-based machines through Direct for some reason

I wouldn't buy another m6811. Mine had the hinge crack issue 3 times (three exchanges one replacement, replacement came back with even bigger crack...) I get random restarts when playing games, and now my keyboard shift keys have been turned into enter and /' key somehow (in bios too so hardware). Maybe BB sold me a lemon, or I am just unlucky.

I have an emachines 6809. I have had it for about 14 months now. Yes, I do have both hinges with cracks. And I haven't taken the time to send it in yet. Otherwise, for $1299.00 - I think it is an excellent buy. I spend way too much time on it surfing, gaming and even for business apps. It can play most games quite well, and even the newer games at medium settings. I play FarCry all the time at medium/high settings. Anyway, I am quite happy with it.

I have a Gateway 7405GX, and this is hands-down the best laptop I have ever owned. Not only in terms of what I got for the money, but in terms of reliability, stability, and versatility. I owned a Compaq R3000 series laptop before this one (P4 2.8, with the other specs the same as the 7405GX stock specs), and it couldn't hold a candle to this one. Between the heat issues, the instability of running anything more taxing than Photoshop Elements, and the lack of build quality, I was more than happy to sell it.

I haven't had the hinges crack, nor have I had the flicker or other issues that peopel talk about regularly. And I literally take this with me on a daily basis, so it is being used often. I play games, design web pages, play with Photoshop - all without a hitch.
