Should I go for the new glossy WUXGA? (9880)

Hello-

I'm sitting here, credit card in hand, completely unsure what LCD to get. Before the glossy WUXGA came out, the matte one was my first choice, even if they had the WSXGA+ glossy in stock. Now that the WUXGA is available in both varieties, I'm not sure what to do. If it's a limited item, and it ever needs to be replaced, won't that mean it will be more difficult to do so?

I'm looking at my old dead laptop, and my glossy (aka glass) CRT monitor, and I have to say I like the matte. I find my reflection in the dark areas of this page to be distracting. Are there any reasons I should go with the glossy besides simple personal preference?

Thanks.

You have answered your own question. Glossy Vs. Non-glossy (anti-reflective coat) is a matter of personal preference. The quality of the display is not determined by that alone, but rather the same factors inherent in both display types: contrast ratio, viewing angles, response time, etc.

I agree. After posting this, I did some googling for glossy LCDs in general, and found a lot of people complaining about glare. Seeing as I've had enough problems with glare on my matte LCD, I think I'll go for the matte one.

Gee thanks mjavor, way to make me even more indecisive! :P

Obviously this isn't related to a Sager or anything, but this picture I found demonstrating just how glossy "glossy" is.

I have the glossy WSXGA on my 9860. Yes. Its pretty damn glossy. When the background is black, its almost like a mirror. So I don't place bright lights behind me, or windows. However, when the screen is full of nice bright colours, I don't notice the glare, at all. All I think to myself is 'Damn.. I LOVE this screen!'

You angle the screen so the reflections are not coming right back at you.

Sometimes that is not possible depending on the notebook position and the location of the light source.

I say go for the glossy. If you look at Adam's review of the two screens side-by-side there's no question which to get. The matte screen colors look washed out compared to glossy.

And reflection isn't an issue. They make those tops with a swivel so you can angle it away from lights. The glossy screen was the main reason I bought a 9860.

for someone who will be directly underneath something like flourescent (sp?) lighting all day, i.e. school, work, airport, whatever, the glare on the matte screen is hard enough to deal with. Only in a completely dark room with you not have any reflections on the glossy screen, even with a light in front of the laptop you will see your own reflection. I opted to go for the matte, it's not here yet, coming tomorrow, and I can always ship it back and get the glossy, but I really think that the glossy is gunna be too glossy. Plus I liked the fact that the matte seemed a little brighter at default settings. You can tweak the contrast to make it look a little darker, but for gamers this is a big benefit to see in the dark.
