need reccomendations for a laptop for programming/gaming

Thread Starter
I'm going into EECS at Cal next year, so can you guys give me reccomendations for some powerful portable laptops. Also, which would perform better in this area, P-4s or AMDs... Thanks in advance for any help.

As a software developer, I went for the Z71V. It was the best deal when I was looking (3 weeks ago). Plus, you can't beat the Go6600 if you're doing graphics programming. Pixel Shader support is hard to find. Pixel Shader 3.0 even harder. I also didn't want a 8+ lb. laptop to lug around. Been there done that.

Athlon 64s will beat the crap out of Pentium 4s for both gaming and compiling. Pentium Ms will also perform very well in both gaming and encoding benchmarks, though they aren't quite A64 level (due to lower clock speeds.)

The Ferrari 4000 should be an excellent Athlon 64 notebook. Apart from it, I'd recommend the Dell XPS2, the Sager 3880, or the Asus Z71V. Keep in mind that the Dell XPS2 has the most powerful mobile graphics card, but that cuts down on its battery life. Still, if battery life isn't a serious consideration of yours, then it could be a good choice.

Consider Alienware pc's for a decent package deal.
