Wireless Problem Client (default) vs. TCP/IP

The first time I turn my 8890 on, or when I leave it "unattended" for a half hour or so, I will lose communication with my router(Linksys WRT54G). The way I get it back, is

1. Right click on my wireless icon on the bottom right

2. Select "View Available wireless networks"

3. highlight mine(house), and hit advanced

4. This opens "wireless connection properties"

5. Click the "General tab" Here I always find that Client for Microsoft networks is highlited, even though I have removed the check from the box.

6. I then highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP and leave. (Note, there are 4 choices on this screen, Client, File and Print share, QoS packet scheduler, and TCP. All have install and uninstall options, except TCP, it only has the install option.

Now I communicate with the router. It sounds easy, but I have to do this all the time. My wife gets on to "surf", and always runs in to this. She complains, and I quote, "For the money we spent, I should be able to get on the net when I want, and not have to deal with this." Another one of her favorites, is "You had to have wireless didn't you?"

Anyway, those with wives may or may not feel my pain, but any guidance would be much appreciated.

make sure when u configure the wireless connection that "enable ieee 802.1x authentication for this network" is unchecked. i ran into the same problem that u did and unchecking this will solve that problem. if u have wep enabled...unchecking this option will not disable it.

Thanks Jebus.

Yes, I have had it historically unchecked.

Do you think I need to click "install" at the TCP\IP section. It has a ... after it, but when I hit it , another selection box comes up.

I don't want to make things worse.

Thanks--Mike

u can select any of the items and select install. it only installs extra network components if u need them...it doesn't relate to the selection u make. if u see tcp/ip in the window...then its already installed.

another thing u can try is selecting a different channel ur linksys router is using. since it runs in the 2.4 ghz range u could be getting interference from other signals. currently i have mine set to channel 2. try playing around with this.

also...do u have wep enabled?

YES, WEP is active here.

In fact, that is when my problems started.

Where do I change my "Channel"?, is it where I type in 192.168.1.1 to access those nuggets?

Thanks--Mike

192.168.1.1

its at the bottom of the setup screen. i also have the mode set to g-only instead of mixed mode. my wireless card is also operating in 54g mode.

r u using windows to configure ur wireless settings? if not...then check this selection.

as for wep...i have mine configured like this:

data encryption checked
network authentication checked
then u'll need to specify the key and key index, the key isn't automatically given to u. under the authentication tab the "enable ieee 802.1x....." is unchecked.

not sure what else could be causing the problem. thats pretty much how mine is set up. hope this helps.

New Development

Just got back from playing V-ball. My wife was driving, I had lappy on. SAW tons of net works on the way in thru my development, plenty of linksys, and defaults, and some cool names, "dontryit "was my favorite.

Anyway--When we pulled in to my driveway, my card recognized "HOUSE" but my browser was dead in the water. I tried the steps from above, and they didn't work, then I hit refresh(right click--view available--advanced--wireless--refresh)

and that worked.

I guess this is a necessary evil????

i actually had problems as i was trying to look at my configurations. it would disconnect all of the sudden and i would have to go onto another laptop on my network and switch around the channels. some channels would work...some wouldn't. i'm not really sure what the problem could be. try disabling wep and see if everything works ok. also do u have the latest firmware for the router and the latest drivers for the wireless card?

I am not sure what your problem is unfortunately, but my setup is identical to yours(I have an 8890 & the same router)& mine works perfectly. I have all the same listings that you have, I also have WEP 128 bit encryption & Mac address filtering enabled.

My 8890 is online for hours on end & has never once lost the connection or failed to connect & the range continues to amaze me.

Is there another wireless device in your house that might be interfering with it??
