Knoppix is amazing!!

Just downloaded Knoppix and tried it out for the first time...I am writing this post from Knoppix On a toshiba 17" widescreen laptop (the one I reviewed).

Anyway...I am amazed with this...no HDD utilization and it is VERY fast...comparable to RedHat and Windows...played MP3's and connected to my university server (one of the main reasons I turned to linux in the first place) with ease!!!

It detected my touchpad, ethernet card but it ran on a small screen prolly 800x600 and did not use the whole 1440x900...

Also - it did not detect the wireless 802.11b internal. So I had to hardwire it for internet access...

Any suggestions on how I can get the wireless to work in Knoppix...??? How can I save my configurations?? Does Knoppix use a small part of the HDD to save my settings?? Because I dont want to be configuring it every time...better it saves the basic settings on HDD so that when I boot with the CD - it can load those settings...

Wireless and Knoppix anyone???

Good to know. Next time, try using these handy quote tags, it makes what you're saying clearer, since you apparently can't use PM.

Back to the TOPIC!!!

I tried two versionf of Knoppix...both detected my touchpad just fine. Both however failed to detect my wireless card. Both dont allow me to change the screen resolution.

I have 3.2 and 3.3

But otherwise they are a great alternative...if I have a HDD failure I wont be bothered anymore Whats nice is I can use ssh and ftp through knoppix.

Knoppix is almost as fast as RH9...sometimes it is faster!!!

This sounds odd. I've used it on two machines with no real issues. One is an old sager laptop (pile-o-crap that is is). Knoppix detected the SMC 802.11b card and X runs at 1400x1040. I don't recall having any problems getting it up and running, or doing the HD install. Most of my time was spent dumping most of the apps and install those I would use.

Recently I used Morphix to test out YAD (yet another distro), and it took even less time to get a new box exactly how I wanted it. Pretty much everything was done within a day, including all hardware configured, cd and dvd burners tested, external HD running, plus all software installed and configured. By far the quickest I've ever got a system to exactly what I require. I always dump the distro's kernel, but this time I decided to use nvidia drivers on a digital display. Wow, sure makes laptop screen look crap.

My 5600 is being serviced so I got a cheap sony machine to work on in the meantime. Franky, I doubt I'll be using the 5600 when it returns.

Err, that didn't answer your question. What wireless card are you using?

The worst part is that it is a toshiba and the wireless card doesnt even show up in the lspci

I am searching for info on the net...

More Qs

Bratag, about always having the GUI in mandrake to fall back on, try downloading a new kernel and hitting make install instead of make bzImage, it will get rid of that silly GUI for you, lol.

On to my new problem, configuring Gentoo for my computer, had a problem installing lilo. I get an error when I try to insatall it because my /boot is read only. Is there a way to forcde it to write? this in refrence to the /boot/something.map.

Thanks

I always use make install. Since that is what the docs request I do - I am running the 2.6-test7 kernel and have no problem. The issue I think you refer to is one with the framebuffer settings.

Did you mount /boot sorry if that sounds stupid, but I did it several times my self. I finnaly just changed fstab to defaults,ro I know bad karma but it works.

in fact you are correct, the framebuffer settings were to blame, however I solved it by deleting the linux partition, ha.

Lol - well thats one way of solving it

Going from the first post......

You shouldn't need a book for RedHat or Mandrake as they have been n00bified anyway so they are very easy to use, and what isn't there that you need I highly doubt you will be able to find in a book....
