Where is the S360 ???

Hi,

Based on what I've read here in this forum, the S360 seems to be the hot ticket. I'd like to take a look at it, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Therefore, I have these questions:

1) Is the S360 discontinued?

2) If not, anyone know where I can find one?

3) If so, which model is the next best thing to the S360?

Thanks!!

Yes...it is discontinued. But...

Try calling around to Best Buy's and Circuit Cities in your area as they still may be able to have one in stock ( or have on shipped to you from another store).

Okay, thanks...

But in case I can't find one... which model is considered the "next best"?

take a look at the s270 (configurable version of the s360). If you REALLY want an S series, take a look at the s4xx models, but be advised that their battery life is almost half that of the 3xx's. Also, try Froogle..

I found the S380 on SonyStyle. How does that one compare to the 360?

Any particular 4xx model you suggest?

And why is the battery life only half?

hmmm...cant really say which particular 4xx model (depends on your needs). Check the sony site to see which one you like.

THe battery life is lower because of the Sonoma refresh, the 6200 Go (which replaced the Radeon 9700 in the 3xx), and some other changes to hardware...

actually, there are still some online retailers that still have leftover stock. i just ordered a S360 from zipzoomfly.com on tuesday, should be here by friday. 1699-100rebate = $1599, not too bad but not that great either but i've ordered from them in the past and i trust their reputation.

I personally have a S360 thats modified. However given a choice of the S360, S380, and S 4xx series... I'd still stick with the S360. The S380 and S 4xx series are really similar if not identical (not sure offhand). But in anycase, I prefer the S360 because it has the ATI video card and the battery life is noticeably longer then the newer version. I also do not like how the newer version has the Geforce Go 6200 Turbocache.... shared video memory.

In any case you can still find the S360 on the market just not in major retailers. If you search around as VQ35 said, online stores will still carry them just in small quantities now as it is discontinued. Given this fact you may be able to find it cheaper but that varies from store to store.

Question:

I see that the pre-configured models only come with 802.11b/g, but I've heard that the newer 802.11a\b\g is much better.

Do *any* of the pre-configured models come with 802.11a\b\g?

By the way, how much worse is the battery on the new models? Anyone have actual "real life" stats?

And why is the ATI video card better?

(thanks...)

the s380 (pre-configured old version of the s4xx series) is reported to have about half of the battery life of the s360.

the ati card is better because it has its own 64 mb ram of memory, whereas the nvidia blabla turbocache has a dinamically shared memory + own memory. it has only 32 mb of own memory and it shares the rest 96 mb with the actual ram in your pc. so this affects performance. also the graphical engine for the nvidia 6200 ain't that great.

i have the s360 and i couldn't be happier.

In that case, why do you suppose they got rid of the 360?

Aren't new models usually made to be BETTER than the old ones??

Got mine from ebay a couple of weeks ago for $1499 + $40 for shipping. It was brand new in sealed box and was in perfect condition. Just make sure that you are buying from a reputable seller (see recent feedback and items he has sold).

the geforce go 6200 was supposed to use less power since it has less memory and a newer design but the rest of the sonoma stuff kind of negate this power saving.

also the geforce go 6200 has a 64bit memory interface, the mobility 9700 has a 128bit if i remember correctly, so theoretically you have twice the memory bandwidth with the mobility 9700 which in turn makes it a faster card

Hey, would you let me know if this turns up please... I've just been informed of the way american online retailers work, and that those stores saying they have stock may not necessarily have it....

i receieved my s360 yesterday. like one of the reviews i read, when i picked up the brown box i thought they sent me an empty box lol but low and behold the laptop was packed safely inside the sony box inside the brown box. zipzoomfly is a reputable retailer, they used to be known as googlegear, you can check their ratings on resellerratings.com their ratings are pretty good like newegg.

I don't think I'll be able to get the 360, since I'd rather configure the system myself.

The pre-configured models don't always have everything included (like 802.11a\b\g with Bluetooth, for example).
