A funny convo. with Dell Sales About the 9300

I called Dell tonight asking about the status of my 9300 that I ordered on May 27th, and he told me that it's in "Final Assembly," which means they're about to do the software testing.

At any rate, I mentioned that I was going to remove the 256MB of RAM and if he had heard of any problems doing this as long as I used DDR2 200 pin 533mhz FSB RAM. He said "No, in fact... this is just ME talking of course... I would do exactly the same thing you are with the RAM. Our $1000 pricetag for the 2GB upgrade is ridiculous."

I guess he figured he wasn't going to make a commission on my call since I had already ordered the system.

Anyway, I ordered two 1GB sticks of "Transcend" RAM. I haven't heard anything bad about Transcend, and there were 10 NewEgg.com reviews that all said positive things about the 1GB sticks. Two of the reviewers actually had put the memory in the Dell 9300 and said it worked great--does anyone think I shoud worry considering this is a semi-no-name brand?

Personally I would have gone with Crucial but that's just me. I doubt you'll have any problems with your RAM. But, if you do, be sure you can send it back and that it has a warranty on it. Also, keep the Dell RAM incase you have a RAM emergency and your comp only runs on the Dell RAM.

The Transcend Memory has a lifetime warranty.

I looked up all of Transcends products on Newegg.com and checked for user satisfaction. They don't have a single strike against them, so I feel pretty good about it.

I paid $229 (shipped) for two 1GB sticks where Dell was $1,000. Dell's markup must be 400% on RAM, I can't imagine how they get away with this under the FTC's watch.

Same here, I figure that people paying more for certain upgrades is what Dell uses to stay profitable while offering great deals. So far I'm ahead $750 on memory and $40 on the sound card by shopping around.

Under the FTC's watch? What does that mean?

A company is free to charge whatever price it chooses for an item it sells. I could buy a 50-cent item and sell it for $100 each, as long as customers are willing to pay that price. It's not the role of the FTC to police corporate pricing structures. It's up to the consumer to decide if the price is fair or not (and I think that $1000 for 2 GB of RAM is definitely a terrible value).

The FTC's job is to monitor businesses practices, and they spend the vast majority of their time on major companies (Fortune 500).

If they see an enormous price discrepency they WILL investigate, trust me, to see why there is such an enormous aberration from the industry standard--especially when the RAM is being imported from Malaysia.

I use the Corsair Value Select, ZERO issues playing WoW/EQ2 which are probably the biggest memory hogs in the world for games. I got it at SpartanTech or something, fine price and great memory.

You can't really go by the feedbacks on Newegg, they usually post the positives. That being said, I purchased two gigs of Transcend from them and I'm very happy with it.

Did you put them in a 9300?

I hope you are aware that newegg removes the "negative" reviews for majority of their items. Most comments that are rated 4 stars or lower, they remove for popular items.

Meh. As long as good reviews exist, I'm fine with that.

The newer Transcend sticks have Micron chips...Micron is TOP QUALITY. I originally had 2x512MB of Kingston in my laptop which worked great but I'm returning them for 1GB of Transcend from Newegg for $110 shipped. Cheaper than 512x2, same performance, and I'll have an extra slot if I ever decide to add more ram.

I have 2 1gb sticks of kingston ram in my 9300 and it works great. I've had some transcend desktop memory in various machines and never had a problem.

2 gigs of Transcend in my 9300 and zero problems. Search for the thread on Transcend memtest results for more info. I'm completely happy with my purchase.

i put a gig of transcend 200 pin 533 ddr2 ram in my 9300, works like a charm. no problems in about a week, havent gotten to run memtest.

I have two sticks of the Transcend Ram (2 x 1GB) and it works perfectly. I ordered them from newegg. I ran mem test overnight with no errors. You should be fine.

I have the same experience with Newegg reviews as well. In fact I have DIRECT experience and proof that Newegg removes any reviews that are less than positive (usually less than 3 stars). I have posted 4 reviews on Newegg with three stars or less, and NONE of them ever made to the list of user reviews.

I know we all like Newegg, and their customer service is great, but I am kinda sad that they have this shady business practice of censoring reviews

How difficult is installing a sound card into a laptop? I didn't get a soundcard--will getting a nice soundcard improve the sound that comes out of the laptop speakers and/or out of headphones, or is the soundcard mostly for people who dock their laptops into ports with nice speakers or into surround sound rigs?
