Hey. I tried searching for this topic, cause im sure that its probably been discussed before, but I was wondering, Im going to buy a 5680, and I am moving to NY for culinary school. So, I was wondering what your experiances have been with desktop/laptop UPS backup power units. I have heard that APC is the best. But, I was just wondering what I would need for protection against blackouts/brownouts, power surges, etc for my laptop. Any advice or deals would be great. Thanks.

Mark

P.S. I already know about the 9.99 Energizer UPS at circuit city, but I have read some bad reviews on it, so Im probably going to avoid it. Thanks.

I doubt there is any advantage to be gained by using a UPS with a notebook. The laptop's power management system acts as a UPS on its own...

Better to invest in a decent Notebook Surge protector which is also portable. Dont bother with those UPS's...

Ahh... Got any good picks for a Portable Surge Protector for a laptop. Mainly Im trying to prevent damage caused by surges, brownouts/blackouts, and that kinda thing. Thanks.

GS is at least half right You can (and many people do) use a UPS for the LINE CONDITIONING function.

Seeing this, you can get a cheaper UPS (not an over-priced APC unit) and use it thusly. You do not need the battery part (obviously) unless you just don't want to power down during blackouts... then, it merely extends your use XX minutes.

I would recommend an inexpensive unit, the APC's are indeed great, but they are really better in an office-type environment where continuity is desired. I'd look at Tripp-Lite or another nice brand before APC personally.

Heck, I have a 1200VA backup (Belkin) on my TiVO & Satellite receiver, and that's a nice (heavy) unit.
