Feel free to flame me I'm just SO BORED of XP, I just want to try something new ( a new work life prehaps ), that's all.

SO, I'm consdering of installing the beta 2 (?) version of Windows server 2003 on my i8600.

I need to use this laptop for work everyday and I need the following to work 100%:

Visual Studio.NET 2003
MS SQL Server 2000
.Net Framework
Outlook 2003
Trillain

Anyone think i'm gonna run into any problems?

I think it is a risky proposition. Obviously Microsoft can't guarantee that a beta release will be compatible with everything. If you go forward with it I would definitly make an image copy of your current hard drive (via True Image or Ghost) so that you can easily and quickly revert back.

I should have mentioned I wass just about to do a fresh install of XP (for the 10th time!).

So the only risk I suppose would be a day or so's time...

Don't the Beta versions of all OS's expire eventually? Unless you want to set your BIOS clock back a couple of years, I think the OS won't run...? Aside from that, I'm pretty sure SP1 is NOT supported for any Beta versions of Server 2003.

If you're really interested in running Server 2003--I'd download the evaluation edition (180-day) from Microsoft's website. You can then apply all recent service packs and security patches without any issues.

Do you mean Windows Server 2003 R2 Beta or an old beta 2 of Windows Server 2003. There is a difference, I hope you know.

I personally don't see the point. I run Server 2K3 on a second partition with my 9100, but that's for educational purposes. For your purposes, I'm not sure why you'd run it as your main OS, but whatever floats your boat...

BTW, if you're bored of XP, you'll find nothing interesting in 2003 unless you're interested in playing with your own domain or using some of the server specific services.
