AS5 results only temporary?

Several months ago I applied Arctic Silver 5 to my processor and it lowered my idle temperatures from about 40 to about 36. The documentation I have read on AS5 says that over several heat up/cool down cycles of the AS5, it's heat transferring abilities increase and temperatures go down. I experience the exact opposite. As soon as I apply AS5, my temps go down to 36. After several weeks they sneak back up to 39. If I clean off my processor and re-apply, temps go back down to 36, and sneak back up. I've done this process 3 times, same result each time. (Note that I have not tried simply adding more AS5, I always clean off the processor first)

Is it possible that I am putting too little AS5 on? Too much? I have tried two methods of applying the AS5: Spreading it over the processor or putting a little in the middle and allow it to spread out by itself over time. Both have the same result, starts cool, heats up over time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Depends on what CPU you have ie...Intel P4, AMD 64, AMD..etc I am pretty sure they have a particular way of applying it to what CPU you have. I read something awhile ago I will try and find the link...give me a little while.

No dust in my fan/heatsink, I clean it constantly. I think I put a thin layer on, but maybe not thin enough. I think, unless anyone else has any insight, I'll just try trial and error: Clean it off, but a *tiny* bit of AS5 on... if temps go back up, try adding more later. I don't know how much AS5 I have left though, after re-applying it 3 times... I only have the 3.5gram tube of it... should be enough for at least a few more applications. Thanks for your input, any more suggestions from anyone?

I have to run off to work now, but I will follow those instructions when I get back.

Thanks! Hopefully they aren't the same as what I've been doing.

Well, I reapplied the AS5 and my temp is 36 again instead of the normal 39. Nothing to do but wait a week and see if it increases again.
