notebook cable lock

Anyone using a notebook lock? Any recommendations. I am receiving my i9300 on Monday, and am considering getting one of these locks. While I am not going to be doing much travelling with it, I would like the option to lock it while I'm at a coffee shop and have to use the bathroom.

Are these locks a waste of money? Should I just bring the 9300 into the bathroom with me?

The cables on those locks can be cut. I would not leave my notebook in a public place unattended.

Just take it into the bathroom with you. Do you really trust other people not to **** with it, even if they can't steal it?

they can also be opened with a simple pen... I agree with Shadow.. take it into the bathroom with you.

I don't know where you live but if I left even my cell phone or a nice calculator on a table it would be gone if I went to bathroom. Don't trust anyone, either have someone watch it or take it with you.

The type of folks that those cable-locks would ever deter aren't even the type that would steal or deface it.

Besides, what if it had a sparkle-free screen?! You'd come out of the restroom to just a keyboard on a chassis, and later that night, someone here would be bragging about their new sparkle-free screen!

thanks. I'm convinced. The only thing I will lock my 9300 to is myself.

I have a few of the Kensington ones myself. I wouldnt say leave it at the fair locked up, but at a coffee shop you would probably be ok. I used to take my laptop to work and lock it up there when I had to leave for a while to do something. No customers ever tried to steal it. I would hate to go to jail for murder, but if someone tries to steal my lappy, out comes the 9mm.

Really? I didn't know the locks could be so easily cracked. Do you have links stating this?? I just recently bought one for my 9300....

I once saw a videoon a bike forum where they picked a barrel lock with a bic pen. I have not had luck doing this, but I have only tried on a couple locks.

That worked on one particular model of bike lock, which the company recalled. And even so, it wasn't quite as easy as the video made it

I wouldn't worry about someone breaking the lock, but I wouldn't trust people with my laptop.

The complete care does not cover theft. Your home owners insurance might but odds are with deductables of 500-1000 dollars to keep monthly payments down it just wouldn't be worth filing with them either.

im going to college, should i buy one of these locks so i can lock it to something in the dorms?
You can but to be honest in three years of on campus living I have never had a problem with my computer, laptop, cd's, dvd's, etc getting stolen. Just lock your door when you leave and you should be fine. Make sure your roommate holds the same value for his things and won't steal from you, but trust me when I say that is very rare.

thanks Neoslash....where did you go for college? Im going to UC Irvine in California

While cable cutters (or a cordless dremel) can cut any cable lock, I still use them just becuase it's an added measure. At my school, laptop theft frequently happens during parties in dorms or leaving a laptop out in plain site for a little while. I always keep my lappy tethered down in my room and library/coffee shop desks/tables: I figure that if someone does try to cut it, eyebrows will raise from other patrons. I just stick with little cable locks - the smaller the size the easier it is to carry - and I get the combination locks as they tend to be smaller and is one less key I have to carry.

BTW for the trigger happy: complete care won't cover gun shots to your lappy, I do not think: no vandalism or intentional harm to your system is covered - bullet holes would be hard to explain as an accident...

I would, it's a good investment of only $20-30 to protect a $1500+ laptop

I go to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, I wanted a smaller college and really love it there.

My freshman year I had an i8200, sophemore year a desktop and i8200, junior year a desktop and iBook. Just be smart with it and you won't have a problem with theft.
