New Realtek AC'97 drivers have a bonus...

I downloaded the new 3.49 drivers for the Realtek AC'97 from the Realtek site and lo and behold I noticed some improvements...

The sound card is no longer "Emulated" as was normally shown, it now says it is real.

There are now hardware accellerated sound channels (33 to be exact) which means you can now use hardware accelleration in games and in players such as WinAMP (before if you could select it, it was just for show, it would still actually be set to Software mode).

I'm interested to see if anyone gets better performance at all with these new drivers and if they fix any problems anyone was having...

i've had these drivers since i first i got my sager. i haven't used the drivers before these so i wouldn't know of any improvements. whenever a sound plays it would lag a bit. i did have eax enabled but turning it off didn't help. i just ordered the audigy2 nx...can't wait for those to come in.

They were released on the 2nd of September btw.

Your machine should not lag at all when sounds are playing, I think you may have a problem there as I have never had a slowdown from it.......

yeah...i got my sager on september 5th. i did a clean install of winxp with those drivers. i noticed fewer lags with eax off...and its only in the beginning when a new sound plays...as if it were loading it.

The newest drivers worked wonders on my computer.

No sound lags on mine... could there be a hardware problem on your machine?

i never noticed any difference between the two.

I couldn't get them to install. 8MB+ download and 15MB extract, but missing quite a few files compared to my old drivers, including missing the Soundman.exe. The sound device remained not recognized in Device Manager. I used the setup.exe as there were no INF files in the extract. My June Beta drivers extracted to WDM folders, whereas these extracted to AP folders. I reinstall the June Betas and had the usual heckuva time tweaking the sound from the laptop speakers to something resembling listenable. (Headphones and external speakers sound fine.) Gotta' write down those settings one of these days.

Probably a dumb question, but are these drivers compatible on the 8890?

Cheers,

Thanks. Mighty nice of you. I'm downloading them now. Your first link takes me to a page for audio codecs, thus perhaps the zip name ac_a349.exe. That's what I was getting before. Whatever!

EDIT: DOH!! I see now. I downloaded the Realtek Media Player, thinking it contained everything, when I should have done the 3rd one down, Driver Only. Still whatever! Got yours now.

No, the 8890 uses a different sound chip.

Rats.

Myrkat, do you by any chance know if and where I can update my audio drivers for my 8890? I have noticed the occasional game skipping.

Cheers...

Direct from Sager's 8890 Update Page. The latest they have is 18 Sep 2003...

Here is a Direct Link to the audio download (10MB, 18 SEP 03)...

Actually, yes, these do work on the 8890s. The Realtek drivers (right now, v3.49) are universal for all AC'97 codec chips. Sagers drivers are old, so dont feel bad updating...

I had used the new sound drivers on the 5660 and it ruined the performance...I had best performance with the 1.61 version...

Yup. The version at that link now says A3.50. We were getting A3.49 before. The web page readme doesn't have any info since 3.37, so I don't know right off what they've added\fixed. I can't say as I noticed a huge improvement even with the A3.49 on my 8887.

Nice to hear! Are these drivers working for the 8890 owners?

The downloaded drivers readme does include a version-by-version list of changes.

You will want to download the 3rd download on the link, Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP for Driver only, NOT the first download, Realtek Media Player(RtlRack).
