Need Help with transferring video to PC....

Thread Starter
I'm a newbie at this and frankly I don't have a clue what I'm doing.....

I have a Compaq Presario X6000 and am thinking I can copy video from my video camera to the notebook (or right to a DVD).

The problem is: I can't figure out what the heck I'm doing....I can't figure out how to get the video off my video camera and onto the notebook. The notebook has an S-Video out on the back....I don't think that's where I hook the video camera up to the notebook since that's an "out" not an "in". But I don't know where else I would hook it up.

Any advice on where I can go to read up on this or any specific input would be great!

First, what kind of the video camera do you have? Make and model?

The easiest and the most commonplace way to transfer from newer video cameras to a computer is using your firewire port. The X6000 has this port somewhere. You'll need a firewire cable connecting both your vidcam and your X6000. Your vidcam might have come with software to do so. Also, check your vidcam's users manual. They usually have this type of information in there.

If you have a camera with Firewire and your notebook/computer has firewire, then that's pretty simple. Use Microsofts Movie Maker and select the Firewire port as the capture method . . . the capture window will control the camera (FF, RW, Play, REC.) If you computer doesn't have firewire, go buy a card. Notebook, you're SOL for firewire video aquisition. So . . .

No firewire, or if you have an old analog camcorder (Hi-8, SVHS, VHS) then the cheapest method would be to grab a USB TV Card. Use your camera as the source (instead of using cable for example). The TV software will have a video capture utility in it.

Actually, you can get firewire in a PC card now, so it can be added to the notebook. I have seen issues with different chipsets not liking different firewire PC cards, though.
