Slow Computer Problem. Help Needed!!

I would like some help with a problem I have been working on for a week now. Any and all help will be much appreciated. My desktop started running at 100% CPU usage in the middle of last week. I won't even be doing anything, the computer will just be running idly, and the cpu is at full usage. Then when I do try to load webpages, or, god forbid, a game or app, it takes forever and responds really choppily. I set a new desktop background to test it out and the everytime I go to my desktop from another screen it loads the image really slowly from top to bottom. You can just sit here and watch the thing slowly fade down as the computer renders the image.

I closed all the running programs and processes that I could and then updated everything from Windows Update (I'm running W2k SP4). After installing the new critical updates and the like I rebooted and still had the problem. Then I closed all my progs, etc. again and updated my firewall and antivirus definitions. Next I ran Norton Antivirus, which found no infected files. (I was doing the most extensive scan of all my system drives, files, etc. possible.) After that failed and the problem persisted I downloaded AVG 6 Antivirus, as I have had good luck with it in the past, and did another scan once it was installed. Again, nothing was found. Next I downloaded McAfee from my school's free software database (I'm a student at the University of Illinois, FYI) and installed it. Upon scanning with McAfee I found and quarantined 3 infected files. Then I restarted again and still the problem persists. I then proceeded to search for spyware with AdAware 6 and removed everything it turned up. After failing to solve the problem this way, I ran RegCleaner and cleaned my registry up real nicely.

I'm starting to run out of ideas as to what the heck else to do. The computer was running fine until about the middle of last week, so I thought maybe I had gotten a virus or someone had somehow gotten through the school's and my personal firewall and gottena trojan on my system. I have failed to find anything except the 3 infected files that McAfee took care of. Now I don't know what else the problem could be. I am starting to think it is somehow hardware related. The one time I shut the system down and let it stay off for a few hours, then turned it back on again, it ran normally. I thought the problem had been taken care of, but then it eventually got bogged down again. I am wondering if maybe the cpu is running too hot or something. I really don't have/know of a good program to test much in the way of hardware issues. I did use a Hardware Monitor program that said my cpu core and surface temps were in the normal range...but then that program started trying to randomly install other things on my system so I deleted it. I fried one CPU already, but since then I got smart and bought a much better heatsink. This beast runs at 6000+ RPM's and sounds like a jet engine in the room until you get used to it. Now I notice I can't stand a perfectly quiet room, lol.

Does anyone know of a program that I can use to check out some hardware problems? What about other possible solutions to this problem? Any insight is welcome and will be much appreciated.

Just as an FYI, here is the system I am running that is having this problem:
AMD 2600+
1024 MB DDR Ram
Radeon 9700
Win2K SP4

Let me know if you need any other specs. Again, thanks in advance for any ideas you might be able to offer up!

do you have automatic updates on?
that happened to my win2k machine also. mine started running very sluggishly after i had installed windows updates. after doing all the various system scans (anti-virus, ad-aware and spybot) and coming up with no problems, i undid the updates and my system was fine (you can do this thru the control panel-add/remove programs, if you did not already know). as myrkat had recommended in his answer to a different problem i was having, turn off automatic updating and just do critical updates when necessary.

Ok, I'm not at my system right now, but I will try that out as soon as I get back. Thanks for the input. If that doesn't solve the problem, I have no idea what it could be. I don't have automatic updates turned on, and I usually only get the critical updates. I wonder if one of those is causing my problem. You can bet I'll check it out.

Try AIDA 32 . It's a freeware and work wonder. I'm not sure if it can detect the CPU temp or not, but it should help you diagnose some hardware relate.
It would be better if you can capture the Windows Task Manager screen. That way I can see what process is using the most CPU cycle. Ohh... by the way try Spybot Search and Destroy 1.2. It can detect some Spyware that AdAware can't detect. Don't forget to update the Sig file before start scaning.
... good luck ...

When you look at the Task Manager- Processes there is a column "CPU" which shows the CPU utilization for each process that is running. Excluding "System Idle Process" look for processes that are taking up large amounts of CPU time. From there you can determine which application or driver is eating up your CPU cycles.

Please review THIS THREAD which is exploring a similar (if not the same) issue.

It may be a symptom of a recent Windows XP update, and is intermittent on some systems, constant on others.

Thanks for all the help.

I just got back from a weekend away and turned my system on to find that the problem is currently gone. This has happened once before, so I am waiting to see if the problem will persist once the system has been running for a while. While waiting I installed the SpyBot and removed some more spyware from my system. At this point in time my ssytem is only at about 13% usage, with the idle processes being about 80-98% of that total. I will check it out if the problem persists.

I have yet to remove any of the updates. If I continue to get this problem I will start there and slowly add them back in. Also, I will check out the link that you posted, myrkat. I actually would like this to come back so I can figure out what, exactly, the problem is. It's nice not having to worry about/deal with it, but I hate the fact that it just goes away and I still have no idea what the actual problem was. Oh well, I guess you can't have ALL the answeres.

Thanks again to all of you that helped out.
