I would like some help with a problem I have been working on for a week now. Any and all help will be much appreciated. My desktop started running at 100% CPU usage in the middle of last week. I won't even be doing anything, the computer will just be running idly, and the cpu is at full usage. Then when I do try to load webpages, or, god forbid, a game or app, it takes forever and responds really choppily. I set a new desktop background to test it out and the everytime I go to my desktop from another screen it loads the image really slowly from top to bottom. You can just sit here and watch the thing slowly fade down as the computer renders the image.
I closed all the running programs and processes that I could and then updated everything from Windows Update (I'm running W2k SP4). After installing the new critical updates and the like I rebooted and still had the problem. Then I closed all my progs, etc. again and updated my firewall and antivirus definitions. Next I ran Norton Antivirus, which found no infected files. (I was doing the most extensive scan of all my system drives, files, etc. possible.) After that failed and the problem persisted I downloaded AVG 6 Antivirus, as I have had good luck with it in the past, and did another scan once it was installed. Again, nothing was found. Next I downloaded McAfee from my school's free software database (I'm a student at the University of Illinois, FYI) and installed it. Upon scanning with McAfee I found and quarantined 3 infected files. Then I restarted again and still the problem persists. I then proceeded to search for spyware with AdAware 6 and removed everything it turned up. After failing to solve the problem this way, I ran RegCleaner and cleaned my registry up real nicely.
I'm starting to run out of ideas as to what the heck else to do.
The computer was running fine until about the middle of last week, so I thought maybe I had gotten a virus or someone had somehow gotten through the school's and my personal firewall and gottena trojan on my system. I have failed to find anything except the 3 infected files that McAfee took care of. Now I don't know what else the problem could be. I am starting to think it is somehow hardware related. The one time I shut the system down and let it stay off for a few hours, then turned it back on again, it ran normally. I thought the problem had been taken care of, but then it eventually got bogged down again. I am wondering if maybe the cpu is running too hot or something. I really don't have/know of a good program to test much in the way of hardware issues. I did use a Hardware Monitor program that said my cpu core and surface temps were in the normal range...but then that program started trying to randomly install other things on my system so I deleted it. I fried one CPU already, but since then I got smart and bought a much better heatsink. This beast runs at 6000+ RPM's and sounds like a jet engine in the room until you get used to it. Now I notice I can't stand a perfectly quiet room, lol.
Does anyone know of a program that I can use to check out some hardware problems? What about other possible solutions to this problem? Any insight is welcome and will be much appreciated.
Just as an FYI, here is the system I am running that is having this problem:
AMD 2600+
1024 MB DDR Ram
Radeon 9700
Win2K SP4
Let me know if you need any other specs. Again, thanks in advance for any ideas you might be able to offer up!
