I can understand your concern, but I want to stress that I have done several searches online and have not found anyone else with a 9880 or a 6800 Ultra that is experiencing this problem.

I really do feel (and hope) that this is an isolated issue with my machine. In fact, I will be ordering another 9880 tomorrow.

UPDATE!

Well - received my second 9880 today. First thing I did after turning it on was install 3dmark05 Pro. I let the laptop cool down then booted it up and immediately ran the benchmark. Guess what - got 5050 benchmarks. Shut it down, booted it again - ran a thermal monitor utility - VGA temps at about 50C - ran the benchmark and got over 5000 again!

Looks like the first notebook was a fluke or something - maybe somthing with that particular GPU - dunno. Everything is working hunky dory again! (BTW - this is my third Sager and again, NO DEAD pixels!!!).

Hey Joshua that is GREAT news!!!
I am expecting mine on Tues. Am not as excited as maybe I should be after reading on these forums for so long(years) as many people have gotten defective systems, some that show their faults immediately and some later within the 1st yr.
As I said to you previously I hope temps and speaker sound is OK.,as well as all the hardware.
Tell me, do the fans scale up in speed depending on cpu and gpu load and temp or do they stay on at 1 max speed like happened on the 9860 after 1 of the bios updates???

Also what is the stock gpu speed?? Luke mentioned 450/1080 some time ago to me. Did o/clocking greatly increase your 3Dmark05 score and actual gameplay???? So over 5000 is a good score for stock settings???

A friend will help get games setup as I have never played before except at his place briefly as I never had the hardware to do so.
Thanks Joshua.

Thanks Joshua.
The fans on both the CPU and GPU start out slow (and nearly inaudible) and scale up as load and heat increase. I have yet to see them ramp up to max - even when running high load games. The stock GPU is 450/1080 as Luke mentioned. O/clocking will certainly increase it. I did a very MILD overclock to 475/1100 and got between 5350 and 5400 on 3dmark05. 5000 on stock settings is fantastic, especially for a laptop.

Joshua and Ambitwogunz,
Thanks very much. That sounds encouraging.
Makes me feel a little better. I will post when I get mine and let you know what I think.

Can you both game at native res at good frame rates??
I ordered the WSXGA screen as I did not want the UXGA.From a review I found on THG on the 6800 Ultra I should be able to play at native with AA and AF turned up. I will be flying some military sim games like Wings over Vietnam and Lockon, since I am a pilot as well as shooters like Farcry.
