what do you guys feel are the best headphones that you can get if you dont have, or have the means for, an amp, cable upgrades, etc?

currently i have the Sony MDR-V600s and while they are good, i'll prolly be making some extra cash this summer and i want a good investment/upgrade hehe

any thoughts? budget for the headphones will probably be $400...

If you're gonna go with the onboard sound, don't bother upgrading. When I'm getting my i9300, I'm gonna pair it up with Grado SR60's.

Sennheiser HD600 (or 650)

$400 is not short on means

A $400 headphone budget is a sweetspot for a headphone and amp combination
example (Headroom Bithead + Sennheiser HD580 = $400)

If you just plain don't want to carry around an amp I'd recommend Grado. They're very efficient (loud) and can be well driven by anything. I've had a pair of well used SR225 for about 4 years now and have been supremely satisfied.

If you want a pair of sealed phones for noisy environments I'd recommend the sennheiser HD280 (~$100). They are also pretty efficient.

my 2 cents

I have tried Etymotic ER-4P/S, Shure E5C, Grado SR60 / SR225, Sennheiser HD580 / HD600 (both amped).

By far, my favorite pair of unamped laptop gaming and music headphones are Audio Technica A900s. They simply sound fantastic unamped.

I agree with kent, I own a pair of A900's and they are wonderful unamped, if you want a closed type of headphone.

Sony MDR-V700

$400.00 unamped?!?!?

How about doing something out-of-the-box. There is a SR-303/SRM-313 Stax electrostatic combo on sale right now on HeadFi for $650.00

Price doesnt get any better...

Sound doesnt get too much better unless you step up to the $3000.00 bracket.

I am completely into high end electrostatic headphones now. Do something different...swim against the flow... the rewards are sweeter!
