m680 Help Needed ASAP! Computer SLOW!

Hey guys,

I am one of the early M680XL adopters and while I love most things about my computer, it seems my machine is incredibly slooooow! I have the 1.8ghz model and I threw in 2 sticks of Corsair 512MB 533mhz PC4200 memory and its set to dual channel memory int he bios automatically. It also has the 60GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive and I even did a fresh install of WinXP with no junk at al. I would think this machine would scream, but it takes forever and a half to start up, log in and shut down. My girlfriends Dell 700m with 1.6ghz flies past this thing at almost ANYTHING. Is there something wrong with my machine? I noticed this issue more so AFTER changing ut the memory from the 512mb 400mhz to the 1GB 533mhz which makes no sesne.

Anyway, any and all help and info is TRULY apppreciated!

Please email me with any advice or possible issues or if I should just call Gateway.

Thanks,
Hayden

My problem is a little different than yours. Somehow my fan runs at a higher speed and thus the notebook is louder than before. I noticed that this happens after I replaced the 512 400mhz RAM with the 2 gig 533mhz Corsair RAM.

I am not sure if the Corsair RAM is the cause of this. I am not sure if higher RAM would cause the RAM to heat up more and thus cause the fan to spin at a higher speed.

I may have to switch the RAM back down from 2 gig to 512 MB to see if there is a difference. This will be a good test.

Read my post again...

Read my post again! I specifically said: "It also has the 60GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive and I even did a fresh install of WinXP with no junk at all." I did reformat with XP Pro and its fresh with no crap. Still this computer chugs slower than anything Ive ever owned... Im starting to think its a hardware issue but dont know how to tell or narrow it down.

Again all help is appreciated!

Dooes this notebook support pc4200? Perhaps call them and ask if it isnt listed in the specs of the notebook. I know some other notebooks (dv1000) can only take up to a certain speed for whatever reason.

I'll put in my 2 bits, my daughters computer constantly ran the fan and it was very slow.(AMD 2.4 ghz Athlon). I noticed the processor was pegged at about 30 to 40% cpu usage at "rest" (just a fresh booted up). She told me that her new hp 3 in one printer was extremely slow. I looked there first and found 20 documents "qued" to print. As soon as I deleted the qued documents everything zipped along and the fan went silent for the first time in about a month. I hope this may help someone.

It's the new memory you added that is slowing it down. Don't know why, but I have read recently in this forum of the same problem by someone else after adding memory to the M680. Perhaps the memory is defective or the specs are not the same, etc. I would call Gateway and get the exact specs and make of the factory installed RAM and try to use the same. My M680XL has 1GB of factory RAM and it screams. Good Luck.

The reason why is because the Corsair memory sticks are for systems that are set to overclock. I have the same two Corsair 533MHz in my desktop and gave me problems until I change the cpu settings in the bios. You guys need to replace those memory sticks to ones from Kingston. They are really good. And yes this laptop does support pc4200. It is definitely the memory. Most Corsair memory sticks is decided for the overclocking users. For normal use and no overclocking Kingston is the way to go. Just my two cents from personal experience.
