Google for Powerstrip. It will identify your screen. The code for the LG screen is LPL0000. It is under monitor information. If you are happy with your current screen, it should not matter.

By reading the FAQ, perhaps?

3. Registry:
Run the registry editor, if you don't know how (For Windows XP):
(i) Click Start
(ii) Select run
(iii) In the presented field, type "regedit" without the quotation marks and click OK
(iv) Look under the following field using the + extensions on the left:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\DISPLAY

press Fn+ arrow down to change the brightness settings. if the brightness doesnt change for 2nd and 3rd levels, its an LG. dont know if its true for the newer models.
-or dl powerstrip.
-or if the screen sparkles, has good color, slight leakage, its LG
-less sparkles, duller colors, more light leakage, its samsung.

Hmmm, I've done all of the above: used powerstrip, Belarc, Everest, another PC info program called PC Wizard 2005 AND checked the registry and zilch--no such info regarding what display I have. ALL of those methods simply provide me w/ "Default Display" or something akin to that. I don't particularly care, but it's just a bit odd that I can't retrieve that info......

That's because you have an ATI card. For some reason, no Windows app can read the EDID structure from an ATI card, but Linux and some DOS apps can.

Do a search... it's been posted many times:

Samsung has 8 LCD brightness levels
LG only 7. (no change between brightness levels 2 and 3)

Brighness is changed by Function up/down.

Powerstrip does not work with all video cards.

After going through the registry guide posted above, I have an LG screen.....I have zero sparkles, the image quality is superior and i can only see minimal (thats being picky) light leakage on the XP black boot up screen...

as for the brightness adjust using the function key and arrows, each level is different...I don't have any levels that don't change anything?

Anyway the bottom line for me was I didn't even care what make it is and wasn't about to install powerstrip to find out....I just love this display

edit- actually mine says LP0000 (four zero's, not 3 as posted above)... does this mean it is a Samsung, or a newer LG ??

Thanks

Yup, I got the same thing, but this worked.. so give it a shot

1 - Goto dell.com
2 - Log in to your account
3 - Under the " My Support " section, click on " My Systems & Peripherals "
4 - On the screen that opens, enter your Service Tag and click ADD
5 - Once the Service Tag displays on that page, along with other info, click on the Service Tag number.
6 - Click on the " Original System Configuration " tab if it's not already open.

That should give you the required info

at dell site mine only lists "J9662 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LENGTH/LONG "

Me too, I bet it is the LG because of the sparkles? Who knows which screen this is or how to find out?

GO TO DELL HOME PAGE FOR HOME AND HOME OFFICE

CLICK ON SUPPORT..........CLICK ON SERVICES AND WARRANTIES.......CLICK ON Original SYSTEM CONFIGURATION and enter your service tag from your laptop ( on the bottom of it and also on your shipping label invoice).

You will then get a detailed page of the hardware in your system each part will show the manufacturer and model number, its not necessary to use third party software to do this as this third party software often misreports what you have anyways, For example my screen panel is a Samsung model X4766, powerstrip lists this as SEC5857.....the SEC referring to Seiko Epson, this is a misnomer. Only LG and Samsung are making lcd panels for the current line of Inspironsk, Latitudes and Precisions.

another way to tell if you have an LG or Samsung is using the brightness settings, if you adjust your brightness you will find that on the LG panels, there is no change in brigthness at all between settings two and three, where the samsung panels will show a change in brigthness through all seven settings.

go to the system control panel then the hardware tab, click device manager. clickt he + on monitors and double click Plug and Play Monitor go to details, and click the dropdown box that is on device instance ID and change to and go to Hardware Ids, mine says

Monitor\LPL0000

So I have the LG, i dont know if this will work on all systems though.
