Hey. Im not sure if its called ripping or not. But i have some DVD-9 series that i would like to copy onto by computers hard drive. I think its called ripping. Whats the best program for ripping?? and i was just wondering, but cant you just copy and paste the items from the dvd onto the hard drive instead of ripping it??
Side question kinda, wen i watch this dvd-9 that i have on my dvd player, sumtimes out of the blue it just completely powers off. But wen i watch it on the computer, its fine. Any idea why this happens?? thanx

DVD-Shrink is by far the best program I have used. It will take DVD disks and compress them so they fit on regular DVD blank disks. Quailty is great and is very hard to tell vs the real. Also if you have Nero 6 installed it will burn the disk for you too.

wen u say burn the disc, do u mean when u want to copy the items from the hard drive back on to a dvd?? i dnt really need to do that. i only need to transfer it from the dvd to hard drive. maybe a silly question, but after you ripped a dvd, nothing will happen to the actual dvd right? as in its still watchable and still the same quality??

correct. The disc will continue to work just fine. For what you're talking about, I use DVD Decrypter, and it works well. Actually, the combination that I'm using is DVD Decrypter to put the video on the hard drive, then Dr DivX to compress it so it takes up only 1/6 of the space. DVD decrypter is free, and Dr DivX costs $30

thanx alot guys. ive just used dvd shrink to rip 2 dvds. its so fast. it only took bout 30 mins to rip the dvd which contains about 270 mins of movie. so good. Also, the main reason that i wanted to rip my dvds was that sumtimes wen playing in my dvd player, certain part of the disc will jump, freeze and sumtimes even totally powers itself off. its not a problem with the actually dvd player because it playes all other dvds fine. But now that ive ripped it onto my hard drive, the parts that would have froze or jump is now perfectly fine. fingers cross it will stay that way.
So do you think that if i was to burn these back on to dvds, they would jump or freeze nemore?? also, wen i burn them back on to dvd, what format do i need to burn them in so that you can watch them on a dvd player?? thanx

is there any other softwares like Dr DivX that is free?? i just ripped all 12 dvd-9 onto my hard drive. the first 9 was fine as they were all under 4.4gb so that its possible for me to burn onto dvd. But for sum reason dvd 10,11 and 12 were bigger than 4.8gb, so therefore i cant burn them onto a dvd. i need to compress them to be able to burn onto dvd. But once compressed, will it lose lots of quality?? is there a way in which you can adjust how much you compress it by?? because at the moment its only like 0.3gb or so too much. thanx.
another question, ive got a NEC 1300A drive. on paper it says that it can write to -/+ dvds, but on the drive itself, it only says dvd+ rewriteable. why is this?? thanx

well, see the above remarks on dvdshrink, as they will solve your >4.8 issues; dvd-+R and DVD-+RW are two different creatures, and I imagine it will burn the R's in both formats but only RW in one.

Also there are like 30 "DVD Ripper" programs on the net... So its really hard to find the program im talking about...

I recommend not talk about "BORROWED" software in a public forum. It might cause you trouble. Just a suggestion.
