ok this may quite dumb, but does the i9300 come with any soundcard if you don't purchase the creative audiogy 2 PCI card?

I don't know what the onboard sound is, but it is fine for the music and games that I have been playing.

it's a sigmatel audio codec, i think it is ac97 compatible.... it's not that bad for everyday usage...

I thought that Intel HD Audio is a standard component of the 915 chipset.

If so, any idea as to how to enable HD Audio in the XPS2?

thanks,

Not for the mobile express chipsets I don't believe. The last 2 desktops I had had the HD Audio, it's way better than AC97, but not up to Audigy level.

I'm actually pretty impressed with the Sigmatel and the stock speakers. I bought a PCMCIA Audigy 2 but was pleased enough with games that I sold it and just use the stock set-up. In Full Spectrum Warrior I can even hear sounds "behind" me.

Well, that's encouraging. I looked on SigmaTel's product page and they have multiple codecs.

Anybody know which one it is that Dell used in the XPS2?

I'm trying to determine if it's => 5:1 so that I can make a headphone decision.

Thanks again,

I believe even on the XPS2 that is still the AC97 codec

From discussions here before and what I've seen myself, it's just stereo - you need a usb/pcmcia card for 5.1 audio.

Well, after the nice things that BrunoPuntzJones said about the "stock" audio quality, I'll just go with that.

I have always planned on getting a set of Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers, so nothing's changed there. I just thought that a set of the 5:1 headphones would be kind of cool.

Again, thanks for the input.

Maybe someone can correct me here. I thought the on-board sound (at least for the XPS2) supports digital 5.1.

The breakout box that the laptop comes with has a digital coaxial output which you can connect to an external decoder for 5.1 (e.g. the Z-680). I haven't tried myself yet as I don't have a digital coax cable but I've seen discussion earlier about this.

Interesting. I was just speaking from the website information. I don't have an XPS2, a 9300.

The spec page for the XPS2 lists:

-Integrated stereo sound
-AC'97 Audio
-Stereo 2 watt per channel main speakers and 5 watt, class D subwoofer with bass reflex port

Don't see an option for adding a Audigy or anything, so may be something else is included that the website doesn't show?
