Anandtech Reviews Of MR X800 XT And Go 6800 Ultra

FYI EVERYONE.......
Here are the links to the 2 reviews. You can directly compare the 1280x1024 resolution results.

The 6800Ultra is on a Dell XPS2 and the MR X800XT on an Alien 7700.
Both seem very close to me at least at the above resolution and both are close to their respective desktop versions which as they say is great to see.

Any thoughts, comments guys????

They look pretty close, but the story below indicates the X800 XT will only draw 35 watts vs. 65 for the Ultra!

Also, I'm REALLY interested in the rockdirect announcement, which will eventually dovetail to Sager, of a D900T w/ AMD FX-55 / X2 + the X800 XT.

http://www.rockdirect.com/news/06_06_05.htm

Basically these two announcements together have put a hold on my purchase of a laptop, until I see what the pricing will be ... also if Dell will offer the X800 XT in their XPS Gen 2.

For those of us with 9860s and the X800 card this is great news. What we want to know is, when will Sager (et. al.,) be selling the card and can we simply buy it and drop it in?

Hmmm ... the Go 6800 Ultra needed a MB replacement because of the power consumption. What's the X800 draw? Since the X800 XT is only 35 watts, maybe it's a drop-in.

I've looked at a bunch of X800 reviews, and no power draw info. I think, before the Go 6800 Ultra, it was not such a big deal. The 65 watt draw of that was big news. So I have no idea how the 35 watts of the XT compare to the original X800.

Man o' man I want the new ATI card now! Especialy if we don't have to send it in for a mobo change like the Ultra did

I am interested in a dual core X2 too as it is faster for multi tasking than what I have ordered and is supposed to draw a lot less power than a P4 660 and therefore I would assume run a lot cooler. I saw that TomsH/W article early this afternoon. about the power consumption of the X800 XT being only 35W.
I am very concerned that price will skyrocket later this month if they are released by Sager by over $500 above what I have configured now. Mine hasnt shipped yet so I can call and cancel but if I do I am then committed to the new machine and higher price, whatever it is. Of course if the fans are as loud as the guy from anandtech says then that worries me and I may end up rma ing it and getting the X2 anyway. Laptop mag has given the 9860 /D900 from numerous vendors great reviews despite the heat, weight ,size etc (and noise?)
Luke and many other reviewers say they are not that bad compared to a top end desktop.
Any thoughts /advice on what you guys would do in my situation????.

"Workstation graphics parts have even made their way into notebooks. And the ones that we've seen are lighter than the Alienware box that we tested for this review. This has to be the heaviest, hottest-to-the-touch notebook that we have ever tested.

In addition, gamers who plan on using notebooks like this Alienware system will need to invest in a high quality sound system. The fan noise generated by the system rivaled even the loudest desktop systems that we've tested. It was startling to realize that, while holding a conversation with someone a few feet away from me, I had been shouting over the system to the point of discomfort."

Yes Maxrule that is what they said alright.
As I said I searched back thru the past 6mo of reviews on laptopmag's website and found all great reviews, all 4-4.5/5 except the Alienware.....only3/5 haha.
Check em out if your interested.

As much as I like the Mobility X800XT, I can't seriously believe that a 130nm low-k core 16-pipe 480Mhz chip with 550Mhz DDR3 RAM can draw only 35W.

Looking at a more objective measurement of power draw, the desktop ATI X800XT PE 130nm low-k 16-pipe 520Mhz chip with 575Mhz DDR3 RAM draws:

17.62W at idle (very good)
63.23W at load (not bad)

source: X-bit Labs: Power Consumption of Contemporary Graphics Accelerators: Graphics Cards on ATI Chips

Please note that these two desktop/notebook cards are almost the same in every respect, with the exception of core/RAM speeds.

Everyone knows that ATi does tweak mobile chips to decrease power draw, but reducing the core speed 40Mhz (8.6%), the RAM 25Mhz (4.4%), plus any tweaking for notebooks will not reduce the load TDP by 45%!

I do believe that it draws less power, but most likely it will still be at around 56W at load. That's less than the 6800Go Ultra, and ATi does have alot more experience with notebooks than nVidia, but the PR stunt ATi put out that the Mobility X800XT only draws 35W is pretty much impossible.

Personally, I'd really like the Turion with an X800XT.

If I wanted ultimate power, I'd get a 2xR520 in a desktop w/ Crossfire.

For a notebook, all of the CPU "intensive" tasks are web-browsing, writing papers, etc.

Playing games is a great thing for a notebook, as I can pickup and go to LANs on the fly.

So for me: low-power CPU, high-power GPU= Turion + X800XT, preferably in a 15.4" that weighs <8lbs.

Hey, with a 35W Turion + a 55W X800XT, it's definitely possible.

p.s.: as long as I'm throwing out a wishlist, gimme my OLEDs, too. What's taking so long?

Karma,
Thanks very much for your input. You have pointed out some very good points from a technical p.o.v. That xbits link to X800XT PE was very good esp the o/clockers figures at the end. re his results. Based on those facts I agree with your assesment.

after all the go6800ultra is more powerful, yet not that much of more watt consumption than the XT(about ~60 watt on max load). So my card is what i'll still want for thenear futur

seems like both cards perform fairly close to their desktop counterparts and to each other. now the platforms on which the 2 articles were written are different... 2.13 ghz pm dell vs a 3.8 ghz p4 aw... so a direct comparison of the gpus isn't possible coz you've still got apples and oranges. you could use the articles to loosely compare the platforms i suppose. both gpus are great. just depends on which camp you like to side with.
