Does the 4200 hdd makes a big diference in gaming?

Hi, I want to buy HP Pavilion zd8185EA it is expensive maschine but I am not impressed with the HDD speed and I dont know if it makes a big difference. So if someone has knowledge about this it would help me. And can it be exchanged or I could add a external hdd with 7200 rpm which i would use for stuff which needs speed? Or is it a stupid idea.

Yes, the speed of the hdd makes a huge difference when comparing a 4200rpm to a 7200rpm hard drive & you can replace the 4200rpm hard drive with a 7200rpm quite easily. Hitachi sells 60gb 7200rpm notebook hard drives which can replace the 4200rpm hdd. Seagate also has some 7200rpm notebook hdd's but they are not quite as widely available as the Hitachi's.

I agree with miner, however I've tried both 5400RPM & 7200RPM drives in my laptop, & My games would load by only about 4 seconds faster on the 7200RPM drive... My FPS didnt go up which is what i expected...

Also when you are about to by a hard drive look at the datasheet & see how hot it is safe to let the drive go... Some laptop hard drives are as low as 40c, and while gaming that temp is easly exceded... Try to find a drive that can go up to 50c....

I am probably not as bad in replacing hardware but I have never done it on notebook. Is it posible that Ill damage something while changing them. Do I loos the waranty if Ill change the hdd?

Its very easy to do...

Any compartment on the bottom of your laptop is considered user accessable, so you are allowed you change the battery, memory, & hard drive...

As far as i know, you wont lose your warranty, but remember to keep the old hard drive incase you have to send it back to HP, so you can put the old parts back in...

You will notice a bigger improvment from 4200rpm to 5400rpm then you would going from 5400 to 7200. I would go with the 5400rpm drive for now..but thats just me

Yep, Thats basically what i was trying to say... the 7200RPM drives are just so much more money & you get less bang for your buck...

Oh yahand with the 7200RPM drives the largest i think is still 60GB with 5400RPM you can get up to 100GB...

Im considering getting a 100GB because i really need more space...

The faster hard drive speed would only improve game/program load times. Its the CPU, Ram and or video card that will improve the overall game performance.

Well, Thats not exactly correct, If you have very little RAM, & you use lots of Virtual Memory then the faster the hard drive the better...

But even still a 7200RPM drive isnt that much faster, they run hotter, & they are a lot more money...

Didn't think of the virtual ram, your correct, but... Virtual ram is still considerably slower than your normal DDR memory ram.

right, for laptops...

For desktops, I have SCSI 15000RPM disks!! 1 SCSI controller channel per 2 disks...
