On the 6000 - does WSXGA+ "look" better than WXGA?

Hola,

After looking at the WXGA screen on the 6000, I was not impressed. I can't quite put my finger on why I didn't like it, but I didn't. Compared to my 19" external LCD monitor (a Sony 1280x1024), it just looked kinda dull. I can stare at my external monitor all day long (and I do), but I couldn't look at the 6000's WXGA screen for too long without getting a headache.

Is it just me? Or is there something "not right" about the 6000's WXGA screen?

Anyway, here's my question: will the WSXGA+ screen actually look better on the 6000? Is it a better "quality" screen? Or does it simply have higher resolution?

Anybody know??

Sure, that works!

Have you needed to increase the size of your fonts (by increasing the DPI size or the font size or whatever) or have you left everything at the "normal" settings?

How does the text look on the sxga? I plan to do some coding on my laptop and don't want text to look bad, for example on the command prompt with a black background. Any help would be great.

I just received my 6000d wsxga and it is amazing. IMO wuxga would have been too small and wsxga is just perfect. everything is sharp, i'm pretty sure im going to buy the nushield tho so i get the nice glossy looking screen. GO FOR THE WSXGA+, im telling you YOU WONT REGRET IT!!

How small is the text? What about pictures on a web page?

Did you have to increase anything? (font size, DPI, etc.?)

For me, the 1400x1050 standard SXGA+ resolution from non-widescreen 15" LCDs is too small for comfortable viewing. I can make out the text, but I have to work at it. I opted for the WXGA with this in mind, thinking that the WSXGA+ would likewise be too small for my eyes. I should have mine in this week and I'll follow-up in this thread, but if it compares favorably to the WXGA in my wife's Compaq X1000, then I'll be more than pleased.

Yep, I understand *exactly* what you're saying. As far as text-size goes, the WXGA is perfect for me as well. But the Dell 15.4" WXGA screen just didn't look that great to me. Again, the size of the text was perfect -- but the overall screen quality was not up to par with my other LCD monitors. It didn't look awful, just "not good enough", if you know what I mean.

The computer came w/ the DPI increased and w/ large icons enabled. I brough the DPI back to 96 as webpages looked like shit when it was at 120. i also disabled the large icons cuz i like a lot of space on my desktop. Text really isnt that small, and you have to remember when you operate a laptop the screen is much closer to you than a desktop monitor usually is. I thought it was going to be too small for me but when i got i realized my face was so close to the screen that everything was cool. i love my wsxga+. anything else and i think i def would have regretted it.

I have the WUXGA monitor and will say it is marvelous. The screen can get a little small here, but you can use the larger fonts or some kind of theme manager like Theme XP.

Keep in mind thst once you receive your laptop you cannot change the screen. It is mainy because of that reason I chose the WUXGA.

YMMV

I did the same - changed the dpi from 120 down to 96 and it looks great. Text is easy to read and the screen is just awesome. Puts my flat screen at home to shame which is a Dell Ultrasharp 17 inch...not a widepanel though. The widepanel is really nice...

Is there a fix for this to make everything look better at an increased DPI? Will that "UseHR" fix help here?

That's a good point... but what about when you actually have it on your lap, not on a desk or table? When I played with a 6000 last week while watching TV on the couch, I rested the laptop on my legs, so it wasn't really that close to me. Do you think you'd still be able to see/read everything?

Here's another concern: last night I was playing on "The Wiggles" website with my 2 year old son on our desktop computer. There was a little kids game where had to drag these little pieces of a car to their appropriate spot. Even though we were using a 19" LCD monitor with 1280x1024 resolution, I noticed that everything on this particular website was really small. All the text, graphics and pictures were SMALL. I realized that if we were using the 6000 at WSXGA+ resolution, we would have had a REALLY hard time seeing anything. It really made me think twice about getting the 6000 with WSXGA+.

Stop using Internet Explorer and it won't matter if the display adapter is set to 120dpi. Use firefox - it looks great. Also Dell has a IEScaling utility which is supposed to fix the crappy text and images in IE, but I never use IE so I can't say for sure.

Also, you can almost always adjust the size of text on a webpage. For instance, with Firefox, all I have to do is hold down alt and and use the scroll wheel on my mouse and make the text huge. (Or you can go to View->text size->increase or decrease)

Seriously everyone, you can run 120dpi if you just tweak it a bit, and it make the screen look great.

Pictures and graphics look good in Firefox at 120 DPI too? or just text?

What about other programs, like MS Outlook? Does it look okay at 120 DPI?

Everything looks good in Firefox, not just text. Everything looks natural. But, if you insist on using IE (which you'll need for a few websites), try that Dell IEScaling Utility on Dell support->downloads. Firefox just perfoms better though, imo.

I have both WUXGA and WSXGA+ and I must say that, even if I don't have problems using the WUXGA at 96 DPI, the WSXGA+ si simply the way to go.

WXGA is simply too wasteful of real state.
