Is the M40-YP3 being replaced?

I don't know if this model is a Canadian-only model, but I called two retailers today and both said the same thing that its now on clearance and no more coming from Toshiba Canada.

It looks like a nice notebook, and seems, at least by looking at specs, that it could handle gaming well (GeForce 6600Go 128mb).

Its kinda strange that its on clearance, seeing that the specs on it aren't too outdated.

my bet is that the m40-yp3 and the other model were made with the purpose of a soft transition to pci-express, and that a newer model will emerge with full ddr2/pciexpress support. best bet is that toshiba needed to use up some ddr ram befroe they fully went to ddr2. so yes my bet is that toshiba will put a new model out, it fulfills a market segment that is too large to ignore.

Thanks for the reply.

I was seriously thinking of picking one up this week and maybe add another gig of RAM to the basic 512, but since its gone clearance, I'm wondering what the replacement would be like and what changes they'll make.

So I think I'll stay put for a week or so and hopefully we'll hear something. soon

Regards.

I'm in the exact same boat as you ATC7.

I think I'll wait it out a bit as well and see what Toshiba comes up with.

yes...wait till next week to see info on the toshiba.ca site.

Thanks a lot YP5!

Do you know the specs on the new model? What about the price?

IF YP5 works for Toshiba, as it sounds like that, then they're probably not allowed to disclose any info.

But if that's the case, can you at least tell us whether we should be excited??

YP5 has always maintained that he does not work for toshiba only that he has friends who do....(whether those friends are office buddies at toshiba i dont know) but that is what i have read. either way he is great to have on the boards and i cant wait to see what toshiba has on tap as a replacement.

Fidget....

If I said I worked for toshiba...then I would be shooting myself in two ways:

1) Everyone on this board would be "bitching" at me and requesting personal assistance from me

2) If word ever got out to Toshiba that there was someone providing information outside of the "normal" ways, I would loose my job

If I state that I do not work for toshiba, but have some reliable sources:

1) This board benefits from good info and a different perspective of Toshiba notebooks and their marketing direction.

2) I can always ignore requests for personal assistance with toshiba issues and participate on this board like everyone else.

That being said...."I do not work for Toshiba"

oh and to answer the question...look for a $1999 CAD price with

1.86, 512, 100GB 4200, Nvidia6600 128, DVD Multi Double layer, 802.11ag, 15.4" w/ trubrite
post #11 of 75
Why not 2ghz finally?
4200?

Price point...in Canada..its a different market when you can get to sub $2000

average customer does not value a 5400rpm drive (versus many of us on this board, we do value, but we represent less than 10% of the population). When I was a Futureshop (big retailer in Canada) sales person.... most customers could care less about 5400 rpm.

cost from intel on a 1.86 to 2.0 is HUGE jump... and again..the average customer understands the performance difference between is nominal... and/or paying quite a bit more money for this jump is not warranted.

that would be my assumption.....

Thanks YP5 for the info.

The M40-YP3 is already at $1997 at Futureshop and its on clearance. The specs you mentioned are identical to it. Does that mean no replacement, and just a price drop?
yp5 is right that the price jump is huge... as well as the segment of the population that we here on the boards represent. im curious as to why the specs are the same but they are still replacing the model...but there are all sorts of possibilities, such as including expresscard support, ddr2, making the lid a bit sturdier (cause people complain that it is not as solid as it could be). lets hope the new model addresses those things...

oh and YP5, i really dont care who you work for as long as the info keeps on flowing. the info that you provide is invaluable and a great insight into toshiba and what we can expect. personally i would not expect anyone who worked for toshiba to actually say that they did because like you said they would be swamped with requests and unable to really participate. the only section that has actual employees posting is the alienware one where they have an employee who has the job of being in this and the official support forums as an aid to the owners. but i really dont expect toshiba to do that. anyways thanks for the info you have graciously given so far and keep it coming, we all love to know what is on tap and what is upcoming from toshiba.

I just realised that the YP3 has an 80GB 5400rpm HD right now. So to me, the 100Gb 4200 drive is a step backwards. I'd love the extra 20G space, but I've seen the difference between 4200 and 5400rpm to know that I wouldn't want to go the 4200 way.

the YP3 has a 80GB HD...

as an FYI to all canadians... once you see a price from FS end in .97 or .95 its clearance.

agreed... you should see what 7200 rpm drive do...

moreover... S-ATA HD are crazy... let alone RAID Stripping on the G20 with two 80GB SATA acting as one.

im hoping for a few key things thatll really make this lappy tip the scales over i6000 and others...DDR2 and battery, battery, battery...im a student so itd be nice to make it through a 3 hour lecture in an older classroom with no plug.

I guess a new sleek(er) design would be awesome too but its pretty sweet already so i can live without.

Ill see how the 4200 works out but maybe id upgrade to 5400 somehow...anyone know any decent retailers, online or otherwise, in the great white north? ncix.com is good but they dont seem to carry much if any selection of lappy HDs...

From what you know, do you think we'll see something new from Toshiba in the 2000-2500 price range any time soon?
if battery life is your key factor... a 5400 rpm draws more power
