Hi Folks:

I was about to buy the M40-YP3 just before Toshiba Canada announced the new laptops. It is still available at the Staples for $1999. Is it a better deal at this price than the new M40-SF3 (which has a slower, but larger hard drive)? My second question is regarding the DDR1 memory on M40s. Is it possible to relace the 512mb module with a Kingston kit (Kingston 2GB Kit 400MHz DDR2 PC2-3200 Reg ECC DIMM) which comes with 2x1Gb DDR2 modules?

SF3 = 80GB 5400rpm
YP3 = 100GB 4200rpm

ALL ELSE EQUAL

it may be a better deal if you truely value the added hdd speed and are willing to sacrifice the larger capacity for it. as for the DDR1, although the chipset supports DDR2 toshiba does not have DDR2 supported and you would not be able to use that ram in the m40, you best bet would be to get 1GB+ of DDR1 400 as it will give you very good strong performance as well. you wont miss the difference in all likelyhood.

Future shop doesn't have it...

the population of canada and the way it is dispersed across a big land mass does not always all companies to create various in products as seen in the US or Europe. Canada will only have the grey M60.

The US has the benefit of Custom To Order system and a population that can support variations in colors.

You'd be surprised how diffucult it is to manage various colors at retail.

Well 100 GB 4200 means more battery life

Just saw M60 in Futureshop (Saskatoon) yesterday. It is too bulky for me for to carry around and it is not as thin and sleek as M40s.

I am very picky about LCDs. Non of the 17inch laptops (including M60, Other P4-toshibas and HPs) do not give as white a screen as 15.4s do. Having said that, M60s have the best LCD among 17inch PCs (In my opinion, Apple's 17inch laptops LCD is still the best). Have anyone else noticed a kind of fuzzy mosiac pattern when you view 17inch screens close enough in the bright white areas while 15.4inch LCDs have a crisper square pattern of pixels.

Based on bulkyness and LCD; I have almost decided to go for M40-YP3 (even though M40-SF3 is also available at Futureshop)

Any thoughts?

Specs are out for SF3 and it seems YP3 has more battery life (up to 3.2hours vs 2.7 for SF3)... How is that possible since YP3's HDD is at 5400rpm vs 4200 for the SF3 and the rest of the specs seem to be the same??

I honestly don't know what Toshiba was thinking going with that 4200 drive. I do some video editing and 5400 is about bare minimum. The only thing positive about the new model is the lower suggested retail price. But given that the YP3 was selling for 1999 on clearance, I am now officially kicking myself for not getting the older model.

The SF3 in my opinion is a step backwards. I guess its either wait till the fall for another refresh or shop non-Toshiba.

ATC7 - having been in this business before... 99% of the population/market for notebooks at this price do NOT appreciate or value the 5400rpm benefits. You have to market products for the masses.

FYI to all, 5400 rpms will become standard hardware by around Q4 this year, but for sure standard on all machines (all manufacturers) by 2006.

I do plenty of video editing on my Sat. 5200 and it had a 4200rpm drive...but I do see your personal point of view.

Thanks for the info YP5.

Honestly, I am a big fan of Toshiba, always have been and will be. I can't see myself owning a non-Toshiba notebook.

And I thought we already made the transition to 5400 as standard a while ago. Is the 4200 really still cheaper and consume that much less power than the 5400? And now with 7200 drives for notebooks in 60, 80, 100 and soon to be out 120Gb, its a little crazy still seeing 4200 out there, especially in machines that are marketed as performance/multimedia units.

I guess they have to clear the stocks of 4200s somehow.

It sounds good for Q4; I'll have to muster up the will to hold off.
Regards.

yes a 4200 will always consumer less power than a 5400.

and yes there is a noticable price difference to the manufacturer when sourcing HDs between 4200 and 5400 rpm.

But that gap is shrinking...(hence my above statement)
