my 700m has arrived

post #1 of 31

just got it today, 8 days after i ordered it. Came with everything i ordered including the 1GB of memory (previous post)

so far so good!

hardrive is getting a workout with all the uninstalling and installing going on. Have to get used to this mouse pad and the tapping of it and i do miss the roller

My hardrive does make noise when things load, like most hard drive do. I was suprised cause my Dimiension desktop with the 7200 rpm hard drive makes no noise at all when things load. Hope it doesnt become noisy enough to distract people in quiet places like libraries.

had a question about the wireless. Whats do you used the microsoft controller or the the intel?

loving it so far
post #2 of 31
The one I just got has the 2200 and it came set up for Windows to handle the wireless and so far so good. Mostly I use Verizon wireless but the wifi works when I turn it on.

im using the regular microsoft client, but have heard some people have greater success with the intel....i have no reason to switch and find out since microsoft's controller is working fine and dandy...

i went to the intel website to see if i can update my intel wireless a/b/g 2915 which had an update available, but the intel website actaully recommends using the software that is provided with the the computer to control the wireless adapter

Does the text look too small to you? My eyes was straining so bad.

I had to cramp my hands together when typing.

Dell refund me back everything today.

My 6000 will be here tomorrow or Monday.

I ordered another 700m using the $750 off of $1499 but I may cancel since I really didn't save as much as I wanted. But, I ordered another 700m before the $750 off of $1499 and I love it. The text isn't that small. I think the text is smaller with the wuxga screen on the 6000. The keyboard isn't as bad as I thought. Though the ",.?" keys are a bit cramped, it isn't that bad. The comma and period I am used to know but the question mark is a little harder to reach. But overall, it is a great machine.

Hey Mr Hemi, I was wondering if you could run mobometer and check out the temps on your computer. I didn't know of the program before I took the 700m apart and applied artic silver 5, so I don't know if it really made that much of a difference. If you could tell me the temps during idle, or while your watching a movie, or an hour of messing around with it, that would be great. I would really like to see if the temp dropped any after applying the artic silver 5, or was it just a waste of my time.

CHC is just a little to advanced. I dont like the idea of having on demand over clocking, really worred about heat and damaging my chips.

i found this plain jane hdd thermomter that just displays the temp in the tray and warns you after you put in the presets. Small program, 300kb doesnt take away resources and there is no expirary date.

http://www.rsdsoft.com/

my hdd temperature at idle is 41 deg C (idle being 5 min of not opening any programs) after a restart, it goes to 44 deg C, then slowly makes it way down. It just went down 1 deg just by writing this post.

is 41 deg C just a tad hot? should it not be in the high 30's?

CHC does not overclock the CPU (at least not on a 700m). It allows you to select voltages for the different multipliers of the CPU (you can not choose a multiplier higher than that set by Intel). If anything it will lengthen the life of the CPU, the machine will run cooler, the fan will run less, and it extends run time on batteries.

Depending on use and ambient temperature don't be surprised to see the drive temp in the upper 40's. 41C is only 106 degrees F.

I use CHC and like it a lot. See my mini review of it here: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=87947

@jkballer: What kind of temps are you getting now under load and idle? Are you undervolting?

okay, im goin to have to look into this more then. All that multiplier stuff just scared me away hehe.

I just did a full system virus scan on the computer now that the themometer is installed. The scan took 20 min, the temp wen to 46 and now its down to 43 after it stopped.

so im assuming anything in the 40's is okay?

this is the one I use: h**p://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/release/0310/mm0310.zip

Could you give that one a try and tell me what temps you get.

How much battery time improvement will I get by lower voltages. I am currently using Centrino Hardware Control just lookup statistics and very interested in setting voltage thing. I am getting about 4:57 reading without tweaking anything. Can anyone have more input on their voltages setting?
post #16 of 31
You have to actually time the battery time because the estimated time is not accurate on the 700m. Even after undervolting, you won't see any change in the estimated time remaining. The 700m seems to report 13W drainage no matter what load is on the system. On my P7010 the discharge reading would change on anything I did, even lower the brightness.

See my thread here for my voltages: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=87947

i used the mobometer you linked and it gives the same numbers as the one i used BUT it gives two other temps. What are those temps? i know one is CPU and whats the other temp?

Also it says the hertz is 600Hz, shoud it not be 1.8 GHz?

also i turned on my computer and the HD temps were 28 C and did some network transferring files the the hard drive warmed up to 38C.

what kinda temps you getting with your computer?
post #18 of 31
I think these are the categories.
* CPU clock
* CPU temperature
* Battery charge/discharge rate
* HDD temperature

I am not sure what the second tempurature is though. I got the descriptions above from the website where I got the link. Well, right now here are my temps, while browsing the web. (i just woke it up from standby)

44 -> first temp (cpu w/artic silver 5)
41 -> second temp (?)
33 -> thrid themp (hdd)

It'll be at 600mhz to conserve the battery life. But if you need apps that require a lot of cpu then it'll increase until it's max at 1.8. After a while my left palm gets hot, I am unsure why it gets so hot sometimes. My cpu still gets hot even though I applied artic silver 5.

2nd temp is case temp.

ok just finished watching the godfather DVD, buona sera.

Fan kicked in about 3 times throughout the ~3 hour movie. When it came on, it only came on for about 10 seconds each time.

here are my numbers

600 MHz
55
49
13.02
44

battery was at 94% at start, now its at 51% (8 cell battry).
