Laptop Battery - leave in or take out?

Hi,

What is the best thing to do with the battery if you don't use it?
I have heard two things, that it is best to take it out, or leave it in and every so often use it until the charge is totally down, then recharge it.
This is what I have been doing, leaving it in permanently and say once a month or so, I run it down then recharge it.
I prefer to leave it in coz I don't like the big gappy hole it leaves when I take it out, but if leaving it in is not good for the battery, I'll take it out.
I'd really like to know what most of you do as I keep reading conflicting info about this.
Any advice really appreciated!

if you are going to be plugged in a long time, consider taking it out because the heat from your laptop can slowly kill the battery. Also, by keeping it in, the laptop will constantly "top off" your battery anytime it's charge falls below a preset amount, which means you are using battery cycles while its just sitting there.

Thanks, am going to take it out then as I rarely use it.

Does it make sense to keep the battery in the fridge (to extend the
periods of recharging it when it is not used for long time).
What is the optimal charge level to keep it this way then?
Who knows?

I read somewhere you should let the charge run down to about 25% and then take it out, and every so often, like every couple of months, you should charge it, let it run down to 25% again, then take it out.
Is this correct?

40%, i believe.

googling helps to get a clear idea about the issue pretty fast.

Thank you again - I did google around but there is so much conflicting information. I will go with the 40% and take the battery out.
Thanks again, I really appreciate the replies!

I would leave it in & unplug the laptop every 30 days and use some battery...

If you lose power with the battery in it wont turn off either and thats nice...

Ok lol, now I don't know what to do!
I think I am gonna stick with leaving it in and doing what Teckng778 said, just using the battery every so often. I SO HATE the big gappy bit it leaves when I take the battery out!

Yah... Plus then the connections dont get dirty...

I always leave the battery in. The battery stops charging when topped off. Notebooks are designed so they don't overcharge and my personal view is that the batteries are designed to stay in. That's why a number of notebook designs actually have one of the rubber cushion feet under the machine mounted on the battery case itself. I don't like a notebook with three feet. Seriously, I just leave it in, rarely unplug my notebook, but do disconnect from charger one or two evenings a week and go cordless. The rest of the time my notebook is always plugged into AC and running almost constantly. The old Ni Cads were much more fussy than the new Lit Ion batteries and liked the deep discharge cycle to avoid developing a short charge memory.

I always leave mine out since I am usually on ac power. It cuts down on the heat and the fans don't have to work so hard. The less heat is also better for the surrounding components.

What kind of laptop do you have? A good one should stop charging the battery which will stop causeing heat... Unless your wi-fi card is under the battery... Then it may heat up a little more but it shouldnt show though the battery...

Sheesh, the question really never got confirming answer either way.
Take it out... leave it in... take it out... leave it in

I'm thinking common sense would be to conserve the batter by putting it in a cool place and to have less heat in the notebook by not having it in... but that is me.
