NuckingFut's 9300 review

This is just a brief initial review where a full review will follow after the first month.

1.6GHz
1G DDR
80G HD
X300 video
WXGA+ (1440x900)........no good!

$1990 - $750 = $1240 to my front door.

Yes its big, yes its well built. Right off the bat I didnt like the 1440x900 resolution. Windows is looking very jagged, browsing the internet also showed jagged images (including text, jpeg, graphics, etc.). This was quite a disappointment. But, even though I was throughly dissappointed with the internet resolution I was happily surprised that my pictures (taken from a Canon 10D) were looking pretty good. They were only slightly softened but still nice and crisp. DVD's were pretty much the same, nice and crisp (not extremely crisp though).

Anyway, Im now wishing I had sprung for the extra $125 for the UXGA w/ TrueLife. I called Dell to find out my exchange options but they say the only thing I can do is return this unit and go through a whole new re-ordering process without getting the deal I got on this unit. Basically, I will be governed by whatever deals are going on at the time of my re-order. This sucks, even though there are still $750 off coupons for this unit they dont apply to my exact set-up plus the upgraded screen.

Sooooo, if you guys come across a deal that I overlooked which allows for what I have plus the UXGA then please let me know. Otherwise, I'll have to just return this one and do w/o for a while.

Final question, has anyone had the personal experience of comparing these two different resolutions? If so was the difference dramatic or subtle?

Thanks!!

Just as a side note. My res is at max and Im running with 120 DPI. Its really IE that displays heavy pixelation where as FireFox looks 100% better. I have yet to examine my Illustrator files to see how they look but I'll update when I do.

I think your DPI setting might be making things appear jagged. I have the WXGA+ screen and I don't see any jagged lines or pixelation. Try bumping DPI down to 96 and turn of the large icons setting as well.

Do you guys have any light leakage. I was thinking of getting the WXGA?

NUCKINGFUTS, are you also on the clubsi.com message boards?

Definitely set your DPI to 96. No idea why Dell sets it to 120 for the WXGA+. That's nucking futs.

There is registry edit for the fuzzy/jagged images in IE. You can find information at Microsoft's website. I believe Dell also posted an update to fix the problem.

Try cleartype at:

It basically antialiases your font.

Naa, Im a west coaster

96 is a bit small for my taste so I'll be sticking with Firefox..........which is much nicer anyway.
If 96 is too small, then you shouldn't go with a higher resolution screen anyway.

There is a bug with IE and high res displays... Here is the fix...

http://henrykautz.com/Computers/high...s_and_inte.htm

Here is the quick and dirty....

Select Run, type "regedit"
Find the variable:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Internet Explorer
Main
UseHR
Change the value of UseHR to 0 (zero)
Reboot

if you decide to go with the higher resolution, wouldnt the 6800Go benefit you better as well?

I also got the WXGA+ screen, and I sometimes wish I got the WUXGA screen instead. I don't like the glare of the WUXGA screens and the native resolution is so high I know I'd have problems reading Word with my eyesight. I wish Dell would have a TrueLife option with 1440X900 resolution.
