Creating DVD's of Home videos.....help!

Thread Starter
I am trying to convert all of my old Digital 8 home videos into DVD's using my Sager 8890. I am running into a lot of problems however.

I tried to capture via Ulead VideoStudios 6.0. It would let me see the video that was playing on my camcorder, but everytime I actually tried to capture anything, it would give me an error and tell me that the file was corrupt. Also, it didn't look like the quality was very good.

Next I tired the TV function that came installed on the computer. I couldn't figure out how to record from that (can you?). The quality looked pretty good in that.

Finally, I just tried to use Windows Movie Maker. That actually worked, but the quality was horrible, and it will only record as a WMV file. I know that I can convert it later, but did not like the quality.

I did download Windows Movie Maker 2. I heard it is better that the one that I had installed, but still not great.

So, basically my question is: Does anyone know a really good way to convert Digital 8 tapes into high quality MPEGs for recording onto a DVD?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully help.

Are you connecting the camera via firewire?

Make sure you have nothing else running in the background while your caputuring.

Make sure to dump the video to a drive with tons of space, those vids will be gigabytes in size.

UseVirtualdub to capture the vid and
Tsunami to convert the avi to mpeg 2.

I used ULEA'sS DVD movie factory 2 and it worked like a charm...
I actually have the full Media Studio Pro 7 ( optimized for hyperthreading) but when I tried to capture, I screwed up the settings twice.... so I tried capturing right from within dvd movie factory and it worked great.

One thing... how are you going into your computer.... your digital 8 will not have firewire methinks.... if not, then you will be going into your computer through the svideo in port.

I have a Sony TRV 950 which will automatically convert analog to digital (ex: vcr/or camcorder ....to trv 950.....through firewire....to computer already digitized.

DVD files are MPG (2 I think) files. Therefore, no matter what you capture it in (avi, .mov, wmv) you will eventually be converting it to mpg anyways. The neat thing about dvd movie factory and media studio pro 7 (if I get it working) is that you can choose to capture STRAIGHT into mpg format, so you don't have to do it later.
sorry I couldn't be more help right now.
