i8600 adjusting internal speaker volume

I am probably one of the few people in the world who would ever have this problem because I'm so nastalgic, but maybe someone out there has had similar problems:

It seems like the only types of computer games I have any attention span for are all the old Sierra ones (Kings Quest, Police Quest, QFG, Leisure Suit Larry etc.) but I find it difficult to run them on my inspiron 8600. I can control timer issues and whatnot, but my problems are with sound. First of all, I can't get my sound card to produce sound on any of the different install settings. I would love to be able to fix this but I dont think there is much i can do. My problem is that the only way I can get sound is using the internal PC speaker. That's all fine and good for nostalgia purposes, but my problem is that I can't control the volume of the internal speaker. It's blaringly loud to the point where I have to cover the front of my computer with a pillow. There must be some kind of utility program or something that will allow me to control the volume. Any ideas anyone?

(for reference, and for anyone who doesn't know, the volume controls, mute, and headphone jack do nothing to change the sound, I need some kind of other setting)

Sorry, I assumed that this issue would be with the I8600 in general, not software on it, but I am running Windows XP SP2 Pro., Pentium M 1.6Ghz, 512MB Ram, 60GB 7200rpm hard disk etc etc. Dell factory sound drivers installed, and the issue is with the internal speaker, so I assume anyone with an inspiron 8600 has this problem. Thanks.

As far as I know, laptops don't have an actual internal speaker -- they either use the sound card to emulate the beeps, or sometimes the beeps come from a modem. Anyway, you should be able to control the PC speaker volume by double-clicking on the speaker icon in the task bar. If you don't see the slider there for the PC speaker, just go to Options > Properties, and make sure the PC speaker control is checked off.

The 8600's do in fact have an interenal speaker. It was what drove me to find this site and I was directed to the answer I needed , which was in http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=47145

I lookd at the hidden "Beep" device again, and can find no volume control for it, I do not know if there is one, but I can't find it. I am happy having it turned off
