Well the story goes, looking at a compaq presario 2800 second hand and not working. The ad says won't boot up,when connected to the mains the power light comes on show's battery charging and hd can be heard spinning but nothing else happens.I know this is vague but at the mo its cheap and I fancy a challenge, what you think?

i would definitely not go with that.

buying second hand is fine is you're looking for a cheaper solution, however be weary of things that just won't work (ie. not booting..)

if you cannot determine the problem right away, then there's a big chance that you'll have a much harder time actually fixing the problem once you find out what it is - therefore, spend a little extra - pay for something that works and that you know you'll be satisfied with

Whats cheap? Might be something minor or major. Does it come with a restore CD? The Memory could be bad or loose. For me it would have to be real cheap.

Thanks for responding,at the moment it is cheap, just sounds like someone that can't be bothered to get it fixed.

Whats the worse it could be and how hard to rectify??????

If it's more than a couple hundred at max, I'd say forget it. See if it has a restore CD so you can erase it all and start over. It could be the memory, see if they upgraded it. See what was the last thing they did before it went bad. It's hard to say other wise.
