External DVD exceeds the power limits of USB hub

Just recently got a Tectra S1 and I have installed Xp Sp2, whenever I plug in a USB DVD drive I get the following message "device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port".
Within device manager all devices are working properly and other USB devices work fine from these ports. The only device drivers I have used have come from XP Professional or Toshiba's web site and one solution from microsoft is to use an external power supply.
Are there any power restrictions for this I/O controller (82801DBM - ICH4M) ?

is the USB dvd drive on ext. ac power when you get the message?

They make USB connecting cords with 2 of the large USB plugs on one end. This way you draw power from 2 USB ports on your laptop to the connected device. If you are already using one of these, external power is the only other option.

external power

The DVD drive came with no external power supply so I am using one of the split cables with 2 USb A connector at one end. I am able to use this on an Acer desktop but not this S1 laptop.

see if separating the ports (back and side for example) work, or try it off a powered USB hub.

I had to go out and get a powered USB hub for my notebook to resolve the problem and it cleared up everything.
